Grady Sanford

Grady Holland Sanford, 61, died at home Wednesday, May 30, of pancreatic cancer. Grady was born in Springfield, Missouri November 4, 1950, to William P. and Helen S. Sanford. After graduating from Parkview High School in 1968, he completed his BBA and MBA at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta. Grady and Carol Ann Webb, also of Springfield, were married in 1972. After time spent with Home Building and Lumber in Rosenberg, TX , Wal-Mart in Springdale, AR and MOAF, Inc. in Springfield, the majority of Grady's working life was spent as Senior Financial Consultant with Merrill Lynch and as Chief Investment Officer of The Trust Company of the Ozarks.

Grady served his community in Springfield in many capacities, including on the board of Sigma House, as Director of the Springfield/Branson Regional Airport, Chairman of the Mayor's Commission on Human Rights, as an active member of Christ Episcopal Church, and on the Diocesan Council of the Diocese of West Missouri.

In 2002, Grady left his financial career and accompanied Carol to the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, CA. His activities in the San Francisco Bay area included offering his professional experience as a Project Consultant to the Episcopal Diocese of California, preparing homemade ice cream and refilling the coke machine for the seminary community, serving as interim Director of the School of Deacons, taking classes on-site at the Jesuit School of Theology and online with CDSP, being an active member of the Noonie Tooners, and riding his motorcycle in the Berkeley hills. This diversity of interests and activities is typical of the beloved husband, son, brother and friend who embraced the motto "Seek the Joy of Being Alive."

After moving to Kansas City, MO in 2005, Grady's activities expanded to include time as a bus driver for First Student and for Arrow Stage Lines, Volunteer Coordinator for Abraham's House, the Habitat for Humanity project uniting Muslim, Jewish and Christian congregations in service, walking dogs and manning the desk at Wayside Waifs, and earning the designation of Financial Industry Regulatory Authority Dispute Resolution Arbitrator. At Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral, Grady joined Men's Bible Study and served as an acolyte, lector, youth mentor, Eucharistic Minister, and on the Finance Committee. Grady was also an enthusiastic member of the Ward Parkway Group.

Throughout his life, Grady maintained his connection with the not-for profit Camping and Education Foundation, beginning as a camper at Kooch-I-Ching on Rainy Lake, MN, eventually becoming Chairman of the Board of Directors and, in recent years, joining the 'old guys' canoe trips in the boundary waters and driving Kooch and Ogichi buses filled with campers throughout Canada and the northern and western US.

For over twenty years Grady expressed his gratitude and joy in life through active participation in the recovering community. His life was greatly enriched by the many friends, pets, companions in recovery and valued colleagues who filled it.

Grady was predeceased by his father, William P. Sanford. He is survived by his wife, Carol, of Westwood Hills, KS, his mother, Helen Vincent, of Kansas City, sister Susan of Sequim, WA, and brother Bill and his wife Carol, of Daufuskie Island, SC, as well as the aunts, cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and godchildren whom he loved so much.

Services will be held at 10:00 o'clock Monday, June 4, Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral, 13th and Broadway in Kansas City and at 10:30 Tuesday, June 5, Christ Episcopal Church, 601 E. Walnut in Springfield, where Grady was baptized, confirmed, served as an acolyte and was married. Arrangements are under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grady H. Sanford Memorial Fund, Camping & Education Foundation, 3515 Michigan Avenue,

Cincinnati, Ohio 45208, or to St. Luke's Hospice or Wayside Waifs, both of Kansas City, MO.

Dear Grady, you were that cool older teenager who lived down from my grandparents on Phelps Grove Park. As a little girl, I was awestruck by your kindness to me and my siblings. You finished school and moved away but we stayed and developed a good relationship with your parents. You all are forever in our hearts.

I was truly sorry to hear this news. The mystery of God's actions as today I see a friend request on facebook which I have never logged onto and see Carol Sanford amoung 7 friend requests, and as I try to find out who this was see Grady's passing. Death is a journey only difficult for the living and while its been almost forever defined as high school/college I am sorry for the loss of a good person, someone trying to make a difference, and of a loved one, friend and companion. May your faith, memories, and the dream of a future eternal togetherness help you this difficult time. Wayne Bowman MD

Grady and Carol were the best friends ever. Such a hole in the world without Grady and his quick wit and infectious laugh. Thoughts and prayers with Carol and family.

All my love and deepest sympathy to the Sanfords in this time of loss. Life takes us in many directions and I am saddened that my path diverged from Grady's so many years ago; his obit describes an interesting and profound person consistent with the cousin I knew. I remember and cherish the closeness of our families. Peace be with you.

Carol and Grady are two of the most giving, kind, and generous people I have met. It's no small wonder that they were drawn to one another to combine that all-time powerful force: Love. My heart & thoughts go out to you, Carol and to Grady's entire family during this time.

Lee and I were so sorry to hear of Grady's death. Cancer is such a nasty disease. However, how great it is that he lived such a full, productive, giving, adventuresome life. Our love and caring go out to you, Carol.

Dear Carol,
I am very sorry for your loss. Grady was a wonderful man. I was taken aback when you both showed up unexpectedly to my Grandfather's funeral, but after reading Grady's eulogy, I now realize that being kind to others was part of his inmost being. Our prayers are with you.

Carol..I was so sad to read about Grady today. You and Grady were always two of the classiest people I ever knew, in so many, many ways. You both touched the lives of so many and made such significant positive impacts, probably more so than you will ever know! Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. You will never be alone because I know Grady will be hovering over your shoulder forever, watching over you and protecting you Iciminda Snook, Ozark MO (formerly Springfield, MO)

Carol and Helen, my grandparents and parents lived down the street from Mr. & Mrs. Sanford for years in the park. We kids remember Grady has a cool teenage who took time to say hi. My brother Tom was lucky to know him as adults. The Sanfords have always been loving neighbors. We are lucky to know you all. Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers. The Muetzel Family

Steve and I offer sincere condolences. I got reacquainted with Grady, briefly, while he was doing business with City of Lebanon. It was wonderful to laugh with an old friend from Parkview. You and yours are in our prayers.

I worked with Grady at Merrill Lynch. He treated everyone with respect and dignity. A very humble man. His quick wit and intelligence kept me on my toes. He not only touched my life but my son's as well. My heart breaks for Carol and his family. Heaven got another angel.

Grady was truly a wonderful man and I enjoyed getting to know him and serving with him at Grace and Holy Trinity. He will be greatly missed, but our loss will surely be heaven's gain. To Carol and family: you have endured difficult times during these past few months and I cannot know the heartache you are feeling at your loss. The thoughts and prayers of many, many people continue with you now. You have my deepest sympathy. May God grant you strength at this time. And may the peace of God be with us all and His eternal rest now bless Grady.

This breaks my heart. I knew Grady and Carol from the time we all were in kindergarden. We were in the same junior high and high school too. Grady's parents and my parents (Betty and Doc Seabough) were good friends. I remember spending time at their home in Phelps Grove Park. I had lost touch and had no idea that Grady and Carol had moved here to Kansas City. My deepest condolences to Carol, his family and to Grady's mother Helen Sanford who was so sweet and kind following the death of my own father when I was a kid.

I was blessed with seeing Grady on rare occasions in last few years, but what a blessing indeed when I would run into him & he would take time to always ask about my life and share that sweet charm he never lost. We who knew Grady are broken hearted at the news of his leaving us, but the heaven's are rejoicing. Mary Ellen (Routh) Collins
