Gregory Scanlon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 15, 2015.
Gregory Charles Scanlon, who was tragically killed when struck by a car in St. Augustine on Nov. 2, 2015, was born in the Philadelphia suburbs on Nov. 28, 1956. He was the third of four children born to Kathryn Fleck Scanlon and Richard Francis Scanlon (both deceased).
His younger brother Hugh Scanlon of Ft. Myers, Florida, has also, very sadly, predeceased Greg, but Greg is survived by two siblings, Richard Francis Scanlon Jr., of Levittown, Pennsylvania, and Ann Marie Kistler Long (neé Scanlon) of Toffen, Switzerland; as well as sisters-in-law, Mary Jo Scanlon and Janice Scanlon; brother-in-law, Gary Long; nephews, Clifford Scanlon, Peter Kistler and Alex Kistler. Greg also has two grown children, Rory Scanlon and Brigit Scanlon, who both live in New Jersey. His girlfriend Nancy Christensen, who resides in St. Augustine, is also mourning.
A free spirit who treasured his freedom above all else, Greg lived for many years in the Pennsylvania/New Jersey area, and studied comparative religions and American history at Temple University in Philadelphia, where he obtained a bachelor's degree.
Greg moved to St. Augustine, Florida, in 1998, a town he loved and felt very at home in. He spent his time swimming in the ocean, sailing boats, writing poetry, taking part in the occasional card game, and walking the beach. He loved life to the fullest, every minute of it. He lived a simple life, shunning possessions to a large degree, buying everything second-hand, and making do with very little. He will be remembered as a particularly good conversationalist, who could talk about philosophy, religion, politics, art, history and much more with ease and eloquence. We will miss his quick wit and his affectionate nature.

Although four years have now passed since he left this world, we will never forget him! He was very special, a truly original human being! We loved him very much and very much remember the love he gave us.

My poet brother Greg, whose last poem sent to me two months ago was entitled The Oneness of Being, will always be a part of me. He was a creative, sensitive soul, who lived life his way. May he rest in peace!
Love always from your sister Ann

My Dear Gregory. You were my soul's companion and my spirit's twin flame. I will dance in your arms forever. Love to you always.
This was sent you in 2013:

We are all learning about love.

Each human, like the dry layers of garlic,
unwrapping, unwrapping daring to reveal
Vulnerability and Strength
Heart as choice
to conquer all fears
When we are finished,
we find we are centered
in a nest of
experience
of our Dares.

One of the greatest rewards of working at the Library is the wonderful people I have met over the years. Greg was one of the very best, and was such a super person in all aspects. I am so sorry for those closest to him. He was a genuinely humane person.

Greg was one of my favorite library patrons. We had many discussions at the circulation desk over the past 10 years. It was an honor to know this truly wonderful guy. His smile and laugh will be greatly missed. My thought and prayers are with the Scanlon family.

"What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch, we may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget." - Author Unknown
