Gretchen Raebel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 1, 2014.
Gretchen "Gretch" Raebel, 52, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died Saturday morning at Regional Hospital of Scranton. She and her husband, Kenneth L. Raebel, celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary on June 22.

Daughter of Jean Gahn Wolfe, Scranton, and the late Anthony J. Wolfe, she was a member of St. John Neumann Parish and a graduate of Bishop Klonowski High School, class of 1980. She was employed by Regional Hospital of Scranton.

She enjoyed gardening, crafts and quilting with her mother. She will be remembered for her unyielding smile, zest for life and making people, even people she just met, feel at ease. She was kind, generous and loving. Even in death, she was generous by being an organ donor. She had a strength and wisdom for every situation that her family and friends will miss.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank Dr. Joseph Russo, the nursing staff and all the staff at Regional Hospital of Scranton for the care they provided to Gretchen. In her 33 years of employment at Regional Hospital of Scranton, formerly the Mercy Hospital, she developed many friendships, and was grateful for their help and support through the years. She always looked forward to being at work.

Also surviving are five children, Megan Lee Cahill and husband, Thomas, Tunkhannock; Kyle Raebel, Scranton; Matthew Raebel and companion, Corinne Milewski, Pittston; Adam Raebel, Scranton; and Eric Raebel, Scranton; a grandchild, Caitlin Mae Cahill; a sister, Christine Auriemma and husband, William, Clarks Summit; nieces, Alexandra and Alyssa Auriemma; nephew, Tyler Auriemma; aunts, uncles, cousins and many lifelong friends.

The funeral will be Thursday at 9 a.m. from the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Ave., Scranton, with Mass at 9:30 at Holy Name of Jesus Church, East Elm Street and Froude Avenue, Scranton. Interment will follow at Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.

Friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Make a Wish Foundation, 1327 Pittston Ave., Scranton, PA 18505.

The Raebel family are wonderful neighbors who have brought such joy over the years to Brook Street. Gretchen always extended herself to others and was known for bringing holiday smiles to all. In a world where many people do not have their priorities straight, she certainly did. She took the time to "smell the roses" and "she never sweated the small stuff." No matter how busy she was, Gretchen always took the time to stop, talk, listen and show genuine concern for her neighbors. She also took great interest in all of the neighborhood pets. Her laugh and smile were the trademarks of her unique personality. She was one of the happiest people we ever met; she loved life and especially her family.

Gretchen was a gifted soul who mastered wisdom, peace, humor, empathy for others and strength. She graduated onto heaven early with the highest of honors as a gifted soul with no more lessons to learn in the school of life here on earth. She taught everyone she encountered how to truly live life.

God Bless the Raebel Family. We are sure you will continue to make her proud until your family reunion in heaven. In the meantime, there is a special angel watching over all of you.

We are here for all of you if you need anything. We care beyond words and will miss Gretchen very much.

Love, Peace and Comfort

Gretchen was the heart and soul of the 7 Gahn grandchildren, she was the leader, first to start a family, first to be a grandparent, first to bury a parent, and now first to leave this world, good bye Gretch!

What will I do without you?
I love you more day each day.
And I hope you realize,
I'll always feel this way.
For it's not the things you say,
or the thoughtful things you do.
You've made my life complete,
quite simply because you're you.
Missing you terribly,
Kenny
