Grey Burkhart Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 9, 2025.
Grey Emery Burkhart, 72, passed away unexpectedly following an accident at home on Sunday, June 8, 2025, in Falls Church, Virginia,

Grey was born on March 1, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois. He was the son of Larry and Shirley Austin Burkhart. After graduating from Oak Park and River Forest High School, he attended college through the NROTC program and graduate school at USC, launching a distinguished career as a U.S. Naval Officer. He proudly served his country and retired at the rank of Commander.

Following his military service, Grey continued to lead a life of purpose and integrity through civilian roles, including positions with Booz Allen Hamilton and the Bank of New York. His work ethic, strategic mind, and quiet leadership earned him the respect of colleagues in every chapter of his career.

Grey is survived by his wife, Susan Older, to whom he was married for 24 years; his daughters, Katrina Fisher and Natalie Ames; his stepchildren, Tess Droujinsky and Nick Johnson; and six cherished grandchildren, Sara, Matthew, Sam, Sadie, Lucas and Carlton. He also leaves behind his beloved 2-year-old greyhound, Blue, who was never far from his side.

Grey was a man of quiet strength, unwavering loyalty, and deep love. He was a source of constant support to those closest to him-fiercely protective, and endlessly generous. Whether it was through a reassuring word, a shared story, or simply his presence, Grey made those around him feel safe, seen and respected.

He found great joy in life's simple pleasures-traveling, reading, taking long walks with his dogs, and spending meaningful time with family and friends.
