Obituary

Harley E. "Torval' Hjelseth, age 63, resident of Michigan, ND, died Sunday, January 8, 2006 at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, ND. Harley Eugene Hjelseth was born March 13, 1942 in Petersburg Township of Nelson County, ND, the son of Nelvin and Rena (Smaaladen) Hjelseth. He was raised and attended school in Michigan. Harley married JoAnn Staniszewski on September 24, 1963. He owned and managed Harley's Hartz Store on Main Street, Michigan, in the early 1960's. He then worked for Joe Lamb's Oil, setting up steel bins. Harley farmed with his dad and brother for 30 years. After farming, he took up house painting until retirement. He loved to visit with people one-on-one, fish, hunt, and after retirement, he took great pride in his lawn & garden. Harley will be deeply missed by his wife of 42 years, JoAnn Hjelseth of Michigan, ND; 2 sons, Lance Hjelseth of Minneapolis, MN, and Scott Hjelseth of Petersburg, ND; a daughter, Rita Hjelseth of Citrus Heights, CA; 3 grandchildren, Micheal, Christain & Nicole; 3 brothers, Norbert Hjelseth of Pennsylvania, Maynard (Delores) Hjelseth of Michigan, ND, and Wayne (Karen) Hjelseth of Naples, FL; 2 sisters, Lorraine Helling and Marjean Brossart, both of Eden Prairie, MN; 1 aunt, Marlys Hjelseth of McVille, ND; and many nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant sister. Harley's Funeral Mass will be held at The Church of St. Lawrence O'Toole, Michigan, ND, on Thursday, January 12, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in the Spring of 2006 at the Michigan Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Church on Thursday, from 8:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hjelseth families. Our memories of Harley are of him being polite, friendly and laughing. He always had time to stop and talk.

Harley and all the Hjelseths' family and friends are the greatest, nicest, best of people. I really enjoyed visiting with Harley. Harley is known as a great man.
