Harold (Bud) H. McKinley, age 79, died Friday January 15th at his son, John’s home in Alexandria, Virginia. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elaine, four children: Andrew (Scott) and wife Cathy, Peter and wife Linda, John and wife Chris and Beth Carlin and her husband, Matt. He also leaves behind twelve grandchildren, Anne, Ryan, Taylor, David, Katie, Wes, Jake, Chris, Drew, Natalie, Will and John.
Bud retired from the U.S. Navy in 1980 as a Commander after serving for 22 years. He is a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he served on a Destroyer Squadron Staff on the USS BARRY. He grew up in Winchester, MA, one of five children (Jean Amico, Joan Scruton, John McKinley & Judy Snell) of Harold McKinley and Sara Dorothy McKinley (Laraway). Bud attended the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy which led to a successful career in the Navy. He also earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration during his time in the Navy. His family enjoyed living in many places during his service to include Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, California and Virginia. After he retired to Chantilly, VA he worked for several companies providing training and human resource services to the government. Besides his family, one of his great passions was golf. He became a certified golf instructor and was coach for The Potomac School varsity golf team for several years in McLean, Virginia. Bud also enjoyed family; Sunday afternoon dinners when all of his family members were visiting were treasured moments as were family beach vacations to Nags Head. Bud and Elaine were active members of St. Timothy’s Catholic Church in Chantilly for 40 years. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 21, 2016 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Demaine Funeral Home in Fairfax. A funeral mass will be held Friday, January 22, 2016 at 10:30 AM at St. Timothy’s Catholic Church in Chantilly. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Alzheimer's Fund or Hospice. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

My sincere sympathy to the McKinley family & to all others who knew & loved Bud. Though it has been a long & challenging time for Bud & his family you must feel comfort in knowing that you provided such a caring & loving environment during this time. Though Bud was not always able to respond I believe that he was very much aware that he was surrounded by folks who loved him. This awareness I'm sure made his passing easier & more pleasant. Just know that the acute pain you feel now will fade. You will always love & miss Bud, but your pain will be replaced by fond memories. Sincerely, Kathy (Chrissy's mom & John's favorite mother in law).

Elaine and family: It was with genuine sadness and sorrow that we learned of Bud's passing. Bud was our lifelong friend, mentor and shipmate. Due to Carl's physical health issues we will be unable to attend funeral services. You will be in our thoughts and prayers.

We are so sorry we won't make it to the funeral as we are traveling home from Florida at the time.
We will always remember the good times and you can take heart that his biggest legacy will always be what a wonderful family he left behind.
