Harold Porter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 6, 2025.
Harold Myron Porter "Hal" passed away at the age of 92 on October 25, 2021 after a brief hospitalization that led to an infection with COVID. He was born on August 10, 1929 in Winthrop, Massachusetts, the youngest son of Esther (Cole) and Joseph Porter. When Joseph died while Hal was a teenager, Esther moved with him to Miami to be near her mother and brothers. Hal graduated from high school in Miami and attended the University of Miami, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in 1951. He enlisted in and was honorably discharged from the United States Navy, United States Army and the United States Air Force. He served the longest in the U.S. Air Force, where he was stationed in Germany during the post war recovery effort. Following his discharge in 1956, Hal enrolled again at the University of Miami and received a Bachelor of Education in 1958 and a Master of Education in 1961. It was during this time, he met his future wife, Eila Mielty, in class at the University of Miami. They were married on August 10, 1958. Hal embarked on a lifelong career as a guidance counselor in the Dade County public school system. Hal was adventurous, had a great sense of humor and loved to travel. Throughout his life, and especially during retirement, he and Eila traveled the world, often being away more than being home! He was passionate about photography, sailing and downhill skiing and skied up until the age of 85. He is survived by his wife, Eila, daughters, Johanna Porter (Carlton "Boomer" Hess), Lisa Porter (Patricia Windowmaker), grandchildren, Jasmine Porter and Max Hess, and great grandchildren, Amelia Porter-Dobrova and Elias Porter-Dobrova. He was predeceased by his beloved sister, Gloria "Cookie" Brecher (Julius Brecher) and his brother, Elliott Porter (Ruthe (Orell) Porter). Hal lived his life with "joie de vivre". He was a true animal lover and especially loved his dog, Clyde. His passing leaves a void, but his memory will always be a blessing.
