Harold Singer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 4, 2018.

Harold ("Butsey") Singer, 94, of State College, PA, died Friday, February 23, 2018, at his home. Born October 15, 1923, in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Morris and Rose Levy Singer. On March 16, 1947 he married Doris "Chickie" Mazer. Harold joined the United States Marine Corps in February 1943, served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre from November 1944 through January 1946, participated in action against the enemy at Iwo Jima, and was honorably discharged in February 1946. After the war he entered the advertising business at the Joseph Katz Company in Baltimore, MD until he took advantage of an opportunity to move to New York to further his career, eventually working at Wells, Rich and Greene in the golden era of print advertising. Upon retirement he and Chickie moved to State College, PA. He was a member of the Sight-Loss Support Group of Central PA. He enjoyed his membership at Victory Sports and Fitness where he could be found on the rowing machine 6 days a week and lunch at Honey Baked Ham where he enjoyed spirited conversation on a wide variety of topics. He was a dapper gentleman. He will be missed and remembered by family and friends whose many lives he touched. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Richard A. Singer and his wife, Jeane V. Singer, of State College, PA, and Judy L. Singer and her husband, Robert H. Ainslie, of Ithaca, NY, grandsons Scott A. Singer and Robert L. Ainslie, and his niece Nancy Levine and nephew Mark Dubin, of Baltimore, MD. He is preceded in death by his sister, Charlotte Dubin. Memorial Contributions may be directed to the Sight-Loss Support Group, Inc., 111 Sowers St # 310, State College, PA 16801. A celebration and remembrance of Harold's life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the care of Koch Funeral Home, State College, PA. Harold was the best boss Ive ever worked for. The executive at WRG would get lunch delivered by the kitchen staff everyday. I was just out of college and brown bagging my lunch as most poor college kids do. I guess Harold felt bad for me because he would give me his staff delivered lunch everyday. He would also every once in a while take a group of us out to lunch to places most of us could not afford. I think I got spoiled working for him and thought all bosses were as kind as he (soon to find out I was wrong! Lol) Harold was a great man and Im sure hes having a ball up in heaven.

So sorry to hear of Harold's passing. I worked for him in the early 90's at WRG and not only was he the nicest person to work for he treated everybody with respect no matter what your title was. I remember him speaking so highly of his family and how proud he was of everybody. I'm sure he will be missed but in the short time I worked for him I could tell he lived a full and wonderful life.

Ahren and I have such good memories of occasional visits, when we were young, with Butsey and Chickie. They were so warm and friendly. We always had a good time!
We are in Arizona until the beginning of May. Hoping to see you when we return to Ithaca.

Dear Chickie, Richard, Judy and family I'm so terribly sad about Harold and so very sorry for all of you. He was a wonderful man who was loved by all. Generous, kind, the first one there if anyone needed guidance or help or had to beat a magazine closing date etc. Harold treated me like I was one of you family. I will miss him greatly. He will be in my heart forever. My prayers are with you Chickie, you are in my heart also. With much love, Mary Jane
