I worked with Harold (Smitty) in the early 70's on Sgt. Bob Hadsall's squad. Besides being an outstanding Deputy & coworker, Smitty had a great sense of humor and a way of grossing you out when you least expected it. On occasion he would eat a bug or pick up a French fry on the restaurant floor and eat it just to be the funny guy that he was..... or maybe it was his survival training! Great memories from a great guy. RIP Smitty

Harold was my corporal during the early eighties. He was a great guy to be around always telling stories and making you laugh. I read where he shot a hole in someone's patrol car. Well that car was assigned to me. I want tell the whole story it's to long but it happened on Easter Sunday. It was a quite day, almost no calls as it should be for Easter. People had gone to church and now home or visiting family and friends. I was thinking of my on family and what they were doing when a missing persons call went out on the East end of what was district 22. The deputy arrived to take a report. After awhile that Deputy came on the radio needing help and someone called the SO stating a large number of drunk males were surrounding the deputy. The Deputy keyed his mic and you could hear he was in a lot of trouble. Many of us took off to his location to include Harold. It was almost a ten minute drive. We all arrived at about the same time and Harold exited his patrol car with shot gun in hand. Realizing the shot gun wasn't needed he through it in the front seat of my car. That caused the gun to go off blowing a perfect hole in the center of the star in the passenger door. I am glad no one was standing on the other side but that noise gave the five of us the opportunity to grab the ring leaders, arrest them and get off the property before we had a worse problem. So this is a memory I will always have along with loosing my car for a week while it was being repaired. There are other stories I could tell but let me just say that Harold was respected by his fellow officers and by the citizens of East Orange County where he patrolled. God Bless you and all those who have paved the way for us to follow and God Bless his family.b4R

I enjoyed working with Harold and respected his accomplishments and service to our country. I feel a lose as Harold joins so many other OCSO comrades that have passed on . I feel there will never be a better crop of Deputies that came on the SO in the seventies , we all were so close and we done so much good for Orange County. Harold was a true leader, he will be missed.

Smitty was my Corporal in Uniform Patrol, Sector 2 in 1980-82. He was an inspiration to me and many others. He made you laugh when things were tough. Some of the things I fondly remember about Smitty: Rode a bicycle to Key West from Orlando, shot a hole through Rick Henderson's patrol car with a shotgun backing up Carl Swenck, wearing a scary mask from Disney while driving a marked patrol car, walking on hot coals barefooted in his backyard on Miami Rd, telling the best Bob Hadsell stories, etc. I have a painting on my wall that Smitty gave me. Miss you my best backup comrade! RIP

I worked with Harold for many years at the ORANGE COUNTY SHERIFF OFFICE, IT'S SUCH SAD NEW TO HEAR ANOTHER BROTHER HAS PASSED ON. I REMEMBER HIM SHOOTING A HOLE IN IS PATROL CAR WITH HIS SNIPER RIFLE WHILE PUTTING IT INTO THE TRUNK OF HIS CAR. HE WAS ALWAYS MAKING PEOPLE LAUGH EVEN WHEN THEY WERE SAD. RIP MY BROTHER WE ALL MEET AGAIN AT THE END.

HAROLD AND I WORKED TOGETHER FOR YEARS AND HUNTED/FISHED AS WELL; WHAT A STORY TELLER AND JUST FUN TO BE AROUND. IN TERMS OF BEING A DEPUTY SHERIFF; HE WAS FEARLESS AND WAS ALWAYS THERE IN A PINCH TO AID AND BACKUP HIS FELLOW DEPUTIES NO MATTER WHAT THE ODDS OR SITUATION.
I WAS LOOKING UP HAROLD AS I HAD NOT HEARD FROM HIM IN A FEW YEARS, AND FOUND THIS SAD NEWS ON LINE. HE WAS WELL RESPECTED FOR HIS COURAGE AND DEDICATION TO THE AGENCY AND ITS MEMBERSHIP. MAY THE LORD BLESS AND KEEP HIS FAMILY AND PROVIDE COMFORT THROUGH THE HOLY SPIRIT DURING THIS DIFFICULT TIME. WE AT THE ORANGE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE SEND OUR REGARDS AND WERE UNAWARE AS TO YOUR LOSS.
