Harold Snetsinger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 27, 2009.
SNETSINGER, Harold Matthew It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Harold Snetsinger on Wednesday the 24th of June, 2009. He joins his loving wife Laura, on their continued journey together. A man much loved by his family and considered a friend by many. Celebrating his life and hoping to emulate his renowned goodness and generosity to others are his children: Trudy in Winnipeg, Matthew of British Columbia, Marian (John) of Florida, Maureen (Ken of Long Sault, Kevin of Cornwall, Kathleen (Alastair) of Kingston, Mike (Rosy) of Ingleside and Laurie (Randy) of Ottawa. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Andrea, JJ, Tracy, Sarah, Chelsie and Matthew. Harold is survived by his sisters Ethyle and Mary and his brother Jackson. He was predeceased by his parents Edith Uella Forsythe and John Matthias Snetsinger, his sister Kathleen and brother Arnold. Harold was born on the 23rd of May 1920. He worked in his grandfather's cheese factory and on the family farm. During the war, he worked on the supply ships that braved the choppy Gulf of St. Lawrence to bring raw materials for the war effort. His swift action saved his fellow shipmates from drowning off the coast of Labrador when they came unexpectedly through a dense fog into the direct path of a giant iceburg. Having watched his family home and the village that he grew up in flooded by the Seaway Project, Harold moved his family to the new village of Ingleside and set up shop as the local grocer. He also opened a small diner, laundry mat and barber shop. Very active and faithful to the Catholic Church he was instrumental in getting Our Lady of Grace Church built and Our Lady of Good Council School on track. He was one of the Trustees on the school board and although working long hours at his grocery store, he took on the duty of bus driver until someone could be hired. After selling the grocery store, he turned his hand to welding until retirement. Harold had a quiet, gentle dignity and unequal generosity towards his fellow man. Seeing his little upside down grin (wonderfully inherited by his grandson) when enjoying a quiet joke was always a delight. An enduring love for Laura and his children, although quietly steady was a constant to be treasured. Sleep well, good and gentle soul. Private visitation. (A LITURGY OF THE WORD IN CELEBRATION OF HAROLD SNETSINGER'S LIFE WILL BE HELD AT BROWNLEE FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL & RECEPTION CENTRE, 14815 COUNTY ROAD 2, INGLESIDE, ON MONDAY, JUNE 29, 2009 AT 11:00AM.) Rite of Committal will follow at St. Lawrence Valley Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at the South Stormont Senior's Support Centre after the Committal Service at the cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations to Woodland Villa in Long Sault would be appreciated by the family. 'God's finger touched him, and he slept' Tennyson
