On December 1, 2020, Harold Reuben Stern, PhD, an influential and respected psychoanalyst, passed away at the age of 93. Born May 7, 1927 in Perth Amboy, NJ, Dr. Stern and his family survived the Great Depression. During WWII he served in the US Army, after which he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. In the late 1950s Dr. Stern began pursuing the field that would become his lifelong profession and passion. He founded the Philadelphia School of Psychoanalysis in 1971, authored a book and numerous journal articles, and continued practicing and mentoring trainees for the remainder of his life. Many colleagues and former patients credit him for making a major contribution to their lives. Dr. Stern is survived by his four children: Gregory Stern, Daniela Iizuka, Moss Stern, and Gabriel Stern. Due to the pandemic, there will be a Zoom shiva service for Dr. Stern in lieu of a funeral. Interested individuals should contact Greg Stern, Danny Iizuka, or Moss Stern for more information.

I just learned of Harold’s passing. I spent many a late night working out with Harold at AFC fitness. He was always friendly, kind and willing to impart his wisdom. He was also an inspiration for gym members as he was in incredible shape for his age. I wish I could do pull ups now like he did at age 90. He will be dearly missed by all of us at the gym. My condolences to his family. May you find comfort among the mourners of Zion and may his memory be for a blessing.
