HARRIET FULLER Obituary

FULLER
HARRIET (SMITH)
Formerly of Edgewood and Penn Hills. A beloved mother, grandmother, teacher and servant of God, went to her reward August 31, 2015, after a long, productive life. She is survived by three sons, Robert (Tami) of Westlake, OH, George (Julie) of Pittsburgh, and William (Kathy) of Pittsburgh. She was cherished by her grandsons, Cassidy, Alex and Andy and also by her loving cousin Sue and family. Harriet was a dedicated Elementary School teacher in the Edgewood School District for many years. She tirelessly shared her many talents with her Church and was a longtime voice on the Radio Information Services, reading to blind listeners. She hosted many foreign guests as part of the Pittsburgh Council for International Visitors from countries such as Japan, India, Turkey and Argentina. She was an avid gardener, enjoyed playing bridge and canasta and she was a great baker (the best cookies). She was a faithfyl member of Emory Methodist Church for over 40 years (and later) of Mifflin Avenue Methodist Church. She will be greatly missed by many. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributuons be made to the Jewish Association on Aging - many thanks to the Charles Morris Center and Weinberg Village and Three Rivers Hospice. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday September 4, 2015, at RAPP FUNERAL HOME, 10940 Frankstown Rd., Pittsburgh, PA 15235, (412) 241-5415.

I would like to offer my most sincere condolences to the family of Mrs. Fuller. She was such a big part of my education, and my life. I was a student at Edgewood Elementary School back in 1976. I struggled with my studies due to dyslexia, (this of course was not widely known about at that time). Mrs. Fuller not only noticed my struggles, but taught me ways to overcome them. I still share stories about her to this day, and her teaching techniques with other people that struggle with dyslexia. I was saddened to hear of her passing and would like to share that though she is gone her teachings live on in all of the students lives she enriched. She took the time to work with each individual student and teach them, not just the group, realizing that some of us learned differently. She taught me I was not slow or stupid but special and gave me the confidence I needed to be successful. I cherish the time I spent in her classroom, and I use the gift she has given to me everyday, (as I am an avid reader). I believe she was the reason for my success as a student, and as an adult in the workplace. She was truly a magnificent woman, and an amazing teacher that I am a better person for having known her.

I had Mrs. Fuller for my second grade teacher in the church building. I remember how kind and nurturing she was to all of her students. I will remember her fondly. God bless.

As 11:00 approaches, I want you to know that even though I am in Cleveland I am thinking about all the years Harriet was part of my life, through, church, travel, best friends, From Bermuda to the Panama, canal, and Hilton head. (William, remember what a good time we had, I don't remember what was so funny all the time but I remember all the laughing we were having), to sitting in her living room waiting for the cheese sticks to be served. Usually as a appetizer as we couldn't wait until the scheduled eating time. During my difficult time I never left her home without some food and occasionally a jacket or a pair of pants she said she didn't need anymore. She was a good friend and a busy lady and I will continue to think of her for as long as I am around. My prayers are with you all.

In addition to being the much admired mother of a classmate, and the beloved teacher of my sister, I always noticed Mrs. Fuller's unflagging cheerful attitude, even in the face of hurtful episodes, but most of all - her absolute dedication to special needs children on both ends of the spectrum and her determination to help obtain the best possible results for each child. One of my mom's favorite people and a lovely woman in all definitions of that word. My condolences to all who will miss this terrific lady.

Teachers come and go, but certain teachers make an impression on your life. Mrs. Fuller was my 2nd grade teacher and has always had a fond place in my heart. My condolences to her family and friends -- the world has one less beautiful soul in it today.
