Harry Joseph Dickman, Jr.

May 2, 1949 – October 20, 2024

Harry Joseph Dickman, Jr., of Darlington, South Carolina, born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at the age of 75 on October 20, 2024, surrounded by family He is survived by his loving wife, Ge Nielson; his children, Michael Dickman, Valerie Zuniga, and Terrance MacGregor; his cherished grandchildren: Logan, Marin, Isabella, Nate, Jonathan, Jacob, Madison, Alex, Anthony, Emerson, and William; and his great-grandson, Zyler.

Harry enjoyed a long career in the Connecticut insurance industry before choosing to leave the field to pursue a new path at Home Depot, where he could do what he loved most: helping people solve problems.

Harry and Ge shared a deep commitment to animal welfare, creating a refuge for animals in need across rural South Carolina. Over time, they built a reputation for their care and love. Based on this reputation, people would bring starving or abandoned animals to their door, knowing they would find a safe haven with Harry and Ge. Many times, they sacrificed their own comfort, often doing without, to raise funds and provide food, shelter, and care for these animals, ultimately finding them loving homes.

Harry instilled in his children a work ethic rooted in integrity, resilience, and purpose. He helped them with paper routes, supported them at sporting events, and was a gentle presence in their lives, teaching them to approach life with both diligence and a lighthearted spirit. He took immense pride in their accomplishments: Valerie carries forward his commitment to helping others, Michael embodies his values of selflessness, and Terrance channels Harry's creative spirit.

Harry's warm, genuine nature helped him build strong friendships and connections that lasted a lifetime. He developed a close network of friends in Connecticut and South Carolina. In his personal life, Harry found joy in the outdoors with gardening and especially fishing on Connecticut's Salmon River, where he spent peaceful moments with family. The family will hold a private memorial in CT with close family, to honor his memory, a tribute to the many days he enjoyed in pursuit of the elusive trout.

I won´t ever forget how Mr. Dickman always made me feel so special. When you were in his presence, he made you feel so important!! Also, one Halloween he put on the scariest haunted house. It was so well done. He worked in it for weeks! It was the scariest haunted house I have ever been to. He was a wonderful father and and a great man. Sending you hugs Mike, Val and Terry. Live and miss you all!
Love,
Allison

I know this is silly, but I knew him when I was a child growing up with his children. My favorite memories, as the neighbor across the street, was always Halloween! That man loved Halloween and had so many great stories! I remember kids would drop their bags and run! Even when I knew it was him, and I said,
"I know it's you Mr. Dickman!", he would stay in character, and still made my heart flutter with fear! Thinking of those times always makes me smile. I have told many of people over the years about my neighbor who had the best Halloween decorations!

Your dad was a super fun loving uncle. Before any of you cousins were even born, he always took time out to chase us around and play game! As we got older, we enjoyed watching him "play" with his camcorder, recording all of the antics happening at our typical Italian family gatherings. He got very creative with producing some fun loving videos that we now have the honor to enjoy! He will be remembered fondly. Oxox
