JOHNSON, Harry L. III 80, of Hingham, MA died peacefully on January 3, 2016. He was the son of Harry L. Johnson Jr. and Mary Collins Johnson of Binghamton, NY. Born in Johnson City, NY in 1935, he was the grandson of Harry L. Johnson, one of the founders of the historic Endicott Johnson Shoe Company. He attended The Eaglebrook School, Proctor Academy, and graduated from Middlebury College in 1957. He was an avid athlete and had the versatility to participate in ski jumping, cross-country and downhill events at Proctor. At Middlebury, he flourished on the gridiron and was elected captain of the football team in 1957. He married Anne Marie Burley of Binghamton, NY in August of 1955 and the first of their four children, Connie, was born a year later. After college, Harry taught English and History, and coached basketball and football in Palmyra, NY before moving back to Binghamton and working for National Life of Vermont. In 1970 he moved his family from Binghamton to Hingham, MA to open the legendary Scotch N Sirloin restaurant on North Washington Street in Boston, which he owned and operated for 22 years. He quickly established "The Scotch" as a landmark steakhouse with a loyal clientele and often frequented by professional athletes with whom he developed many close friendships. A friend of Bill W's for 39 years, he was devoted to the fellowship. He cherished his family and enjoyed skiing with them in the winter and spending summers at his family vacation home on Long Pond in Plymouth, MA. A highlight and joy for him was the time he spent with his grandchildren at various family, school and sporting events. He is survived by his daughter Connie & husband Mark Jaquith of Warwick RI, son Jeff Johnson & wife Pam, daughter Lori & husband David McCarthy, and daughter Sarah & husband George Beal, all of Hingham. Also survived by his 11 grandchildren; Andrew, Kelsey & Colby Johnson, Will, Perry, Cotter & Jack McCarthy, Jennifer & Monica Beal, and Christopher & Petty Officer Jeffrey Jaquith. He leaves behind his sister Sarah Jane Cloughly, of Florida, his former wife Anne Johnson Kimball of Hingham, and Maria Rogerson of Duxbury, and many nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by his brother Frederick (Ferdy) Johnson and his wife Constance, his brother-in-law D. Bruce Cloughly, his sister Carol Abbot, and his granddaughter Hannah Collins McCarthy. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Thursday 4-8 PM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM. A Funeral Mass will be held Friday in St. Paul's Church, Hingham at 10 AM. Burial will be private at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Harry's memory to The Gosnold Foundation, 200 Ter Heun Drive, Falmouth, MA 02540 or go to www.gosnold.org to help support and aid those seeking recovery from addiction. As the granddaughter of the late George F. Johnson, I remember Brud's parents, "Cousin" Mary and "Uncle" Harry Johnson, who
were wonderful friends of my Mother, Wilma Johnson Smith Tompkins. I remember Harry as Ferdy's "big brother" and remember thinking of them as "heartbreakers" because they were SO cute. No one could have ever imagined the tragedies which would befall this wonderful family. (the death of Harry's father and then the untimely and accidental death of Ferdy.) Harry was an inspiration to us all in his later years, and turned his life around both from a personal and a business standpoint. What a remarkable man, and my heart goes out to his family, especially his wife, Ann Burley (darling girl, I can still see her face as if it were yesterday). He was blessed with a great family. RIP, Harry. Jean Smith Horner, Brentwood, Ca., Raised in Binghamton, New York. Daughter of Brewster Weed Smith and Wilma Margaret Johnson etc. etc. etc. Thank you, cousin Tim for sending me this notice. So many memories..........

I met Harry In Perth Australia in 1984 when I had been in AA for less than a year. For many years on my AA birthday I would recieve my coin from Harry whom I was able to visit in Boston.
Harry will always be in my memory as my friend and first sponsor.

I coached Harry's son, Jeff, at Middlebury College. This four-year stretch was the beginning of my friendship with "Moose". For many years Harry hosted Middlebury teams at the Scotch. The many lacrosse Senior Nights are the fondest of memories for legions of Middlebury lacrosse players.

Always gracious and kind, Harry was the friend, parent on the sideline that you love. Always a smile, a kind word......a true sportsman in every regard.

Sincere best wishes to Jeff and all the family.

Connie, Jeff, Lori, and Sarah, sorry to hear of my good friend Harry's passing. So many great memories including the times when each of you were born. Distance separated us the last few years, but from grammar school on Harry and I if not together were in close contact with each other. I will be forever grateful for his friendship and the all the experiences such as finally getting to a Middlebury football game, albeit a little late, which was played in a huge storm, watching what we thought was his number, and finding out when the game was over that he was carried off with a broken leg after the opening kick-off. Other times were much more fun for him.

So Sorry to hear about this. I have vivid and very fond memories of Mr. Johnson from when I was little... sleepovers at Sarah's and he would always make us laugh... dinners with my Dad at the Scotch before Celtics games, and he would always stop at the table to say hello...he was a true gentleman.
