Hello everyone. I just wanted to let you know that Ed and I attended the Algonquin College's School of Hospitality and Tourism Annual Student Awards evening on Thursday. We presented the Harry Reece Spirit of Life award to two recipients, Bridget Burns and Devon Gowling. I must admit, we didn't know what to expect but we certainly weren't disappointed. The event was both uplifting and emotional. Uplifting because these students are excelling in a field that was so close to Harry's heart and they are benefiting from the generosity of those of you who have donated and continue to donate to the Harry Reece Bursary. As far as emotional, I don't think I need to explain that one but I will say that Ed and I loved the whole experience and would gladly do it again.

Harry - it took me a long time before I could make another entry into your guest book. The words would not come and they still escape me..... but I will try..... I look around and everything seems to remind me of you. I take some comfort in that but also it makes me sad because you're not here. You were always a great friend and I will miss you always.

As i sit here watching the Dallas vs Minnesota playoff game my thoughts go out to you as I am sure many if not all of your patrons and friends thoughts do at this sadly memorable time of year.
I know you would be embarrassed to have all these kind and caring words heaped on your person if you were still with us. Such my friend is the price you have to pay for so positively impacted on so many people.
Enjoy the game! $20.00 says Dallas.

Harry, I thought of you so many times throughout the holidays. Still doesn't feel like you are gone. Any kitchen/bar store I entered into I felt you were right there behind me looking for our boxing week deals. I did you proud in Stokes the other day. I remember picking you up at the train station after you being away to visit your family and you always had a very thoughtful gift that you had found like my suede gloves to match my long coat. Somehow you always found the perfect choice. You were always so thoughtful and caring and you were always there for me. I miss your smile and your positive demeanor you always had with me and everyone else. Funny, the year you passed, I met another bartender out in Constance Bay and I swear he could be your younger brother, we talk a lot like you and I used to and once in a while I even turn to order another corona and call him "H". I proudly smile and say sorry but there is only one H Steve but I'm glad he is there to talk to. It's like you sent me an angel to help me through this sometimes difficult life. I still miss you all the time and think of you every passing day my friend.

Every year at this time, I remember my sister Maureen's Birthday and
Harry's shortly thereafter. I can't believe it's been 2 years already. They were very good friends to each other and had also many mutual friends in common. God sought to take them both so close to each other. I truly hope they are looking out for each other in the great beyond.

I had a chance to visit a place where H loved to spent most of his free time, his cabin on Clayton Lake off highway # 7. The photo was taken from a small dock nestled in the catails and marshes that harry built.
This is a photo taken late June of 2007 six months after Harry's dealth. As I looked out onto the lake my heart stopped for a moment, imagining that I was looking at H spending the afternoon doing one of the things he loved.

I having been going on and off to Capones for the last 6 to 7 years.
The first day I was there I was introduced to Harry. I had been told about him prior to my first meeting. I had never met a bartender who was so friendly. He had an opinion for nearly every topic you can think of. He also made the best Peach Colada I have ever had.I was sadden to here about his accident. My condolences to his
family and his many friends.

I met Harry shortly after moving to Ottawa on my first visit to Capones. On my second visit, when I got to the table, my drink was already there. Harry had a tremendous memory.

If Capones was my home, Harry was family.

As many have said, you couldn't help but love Harry. Harry was the soul of Capones.

When I found out from Danny Dear of Harry's passing, it brought tears to my eyes.

You are an honest, caring person and (obviously) a friend to many and will be missed.

I am fortunate that you touched my life.

I will drive up to Ottawa and have a drink on your behalf, but I somehow feel that home won't be the same.

I would like to extend my condolences to Harry’s family. This must be such a difficult time for you, just know that Harry was a wonderful person who loved life and that his memory will live forever in all of us.
I am the daughter of the late Bob Hughes and I remember going into Capone’s when I was a little girl probably around the age of 7 or 8 with my dad. Dad would always meet up with all his friends for drinks on Fridays at Capone's after work and I would always go along. Harry would always be there with a smile on his face and would always ask me if I’d like a Shirley Temple to drink (and of course I always did)! That is just one of the distinct memories that I have of Harry over the many years he and dad have been friends.
Harry you will be forever missed but always in our hearts. Now, you are in a special place with my dad.

Love always,
Caitlyne Hughes (and the late Bobby Hughes)

Words can’t express how much we feel for you at this sad time. We share in your heartache at the tragic loss of Harry – a special nephew and cousin.

Amidst the sorrow, we know there are many happy memories. Harry will always be remembered with love and affection, especially by those of us who were fortunate to know him personally.

Although we are many miles apart, you are very close in our hearts. All our thoughts are with you now and always.

Uncle Jim, Aunty Mary, Heather & Dave
Words cannot express how much I wish I could be there with you all at this time. I will always remember Harry as the fun loving cousin who was only too happy to take me with him when he was at home for Christmas. He got delight in not letting on I was his cousin and was very protective when anyone commented on my Aussie accent. I always think of him as handsome Harry and he reminded me of my Dad. God bless you all.

February 2, 2007

Dear Uncle Jim, Aunty Mary, Heather & Dave,
The news of Harry's death was a terrible shock for us here in Australia. I will always remember Harry as my BIG cousin who was such a happy person to be around. I will also remember how he loved his mum's apple pie and cheese (not done here in Australia) that Christmas I spent with you in 1980. It seems like only yesterday he came in with his big coat on and we all were greeted with his wonderful smile. I still have my photos and took them out to look at after I heard from you about the tragedy.
He will live in our hearts here in Australia along with his beautiful cousin, June, who will be there when he reaches the other side. It seems they were destined to beat us all in the race for eternal peace. For me it seems their lives were entwined from the day they were born (on almost the very same time here on earth). June beat him here on 8 August 1957 by one day and went ahead of him again to the after life.
You will be missed Harry by your family here in Australia. Aunty Mary, Uncle Jim and Heather please know that we will always hold a special place for you in our hearts as well. May you all find comfort in the specail words that all who knew Harry have written here. Sending you our love and sympathy for your loss.

I'll always remember how comfortable you made everbody feel at your bar and how you always took the time to make sure the kitchen was able to make the best possible meals for those comfortable people.I'll always remember one of the few times 3 busy restaurant workers were able to spend some time away at yours and Dale's camp. You supplied the margaritas, there was a meal(a little too ambitious for a camp),someone produced some scotch then cigars,we had music,tv,and even a dart game plus some good old conversation where you were heard to say "this is some good living".It certainly was my friend.

To the Reece Family, my deepest sympathies to you during this time. Harry will always be remembered for his kindness and friendship. I always went out of my way to drive to Capones just to have a drink and spend some time with Dad and Harry (...and the rest of the "kids"...). The day I decided to visit Mom for lunch was the day I was given the news. It was sureal at first and hard to believe, but as it started to sink in, I was truly saddened because we lost a great human being and a caring friend. Thanks for the ear when I needed one Harry. And when I didn't, it was great just be around you. I'll miss you pal, you'll always be in our thoughts.

Dear Reece Family
My mother (Shirley Keeler) called last night with the sad news.
I have fond memories of early childhood christmas times spent with your family. Harry would always give me a horse ride on his shoulders. I used to love it because it made me feel special. As a 'little boy', to recieve such kind and generous attention from one of the 'big boys' was real thrill. It was a fine gift Harry had for making one feel appreciated and respected. I share some small part of the sadness of all of you as well as that of Harry's friends.
My wife Shelley and I send warm regards and prayers of comfort to all who will miss Harry.

Jan. 29th at Capones, 831 Industrial ave. All are welcome. The hours are from 2:00 till 4:00 p.m. Anyone who knew Harrys' bar, knows these are only guidelines. God I miss you H. Orie
