Chapin - Funeral service for Harry Wesley Switzer, 80, will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church, Chapin. Rev. Jason Antley is officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Mr. Switzer died Wednesday, December 23, 2009, after a brief illness. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late D.C. and Alma N. Switzer. Harry graduated from Dreher High School where he played football. He served four years in the U.S. Navy and 32 years with the Columbia Fire Department, attaining Captain rank. He was a hard worker, skilled at carpentry and painting and always willing to help family and friends with projects. A strong outdoorsman, he loved fishing and deer hunting and was well-known for his fish fry suppers. He even survived being shot during a hunting accident in 1977. Harry enjoyed watching Western movies and football on TV. An active member of Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church, he cared for his mother, Alma (Nannie), until her death at almost 103 years old. Surviving are his sister, Marion “Birdie� Culp; son, Christopher Switzer; daughter, Donna S. Rabon; five grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, D.C. Switzer, Jr and Fletcher S. Switzer. He was married to Betty J. Switzer for 27 years. Memorials may be made to Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church, 11733 Broad River Road, Chapin, SC 29036.
