HARRINGTON, Hazel Peace Hastings
September 2, 1918 – June 19, 2013
Hazel Harrington died peacefully after an unflinching stand in the face of a lengthy illness. Adored wife of the late John Eric Harrington. Cherished mother of the late Sandra Hazel Harrington, Diana DeBoe of Virginia Beach (Christopher) and Willa Gauthier of Toronto (the late Rip Gauthier). Proud Grandmother of Kelly Gauthier (Alun Ackery), Jennifer McEachern (John) and Joshua DeBoe and great-grandmother of Ella & Tatum Ackery and Grace McEachern. Born to the late Hazel Marguerite Ekers and John Ogilvy Hastings she is also predeceased by her brothers Roy and William Hastings. Survived by her beloved sister Joan Harrington (the late Conrad), sister-in-law Ann Hastings and many nieces and nephews. Hazel's life demonstrated vibrancy, purpose, grace and compassion. She accepted her many talents as gifts for a greater cause and dedicated herself to improving all aspects of the world around her. Married in WWII to Eric Harrington they enjoyed nearly 50 great years together. She lived her entire life in Montreal, Ste Agathe and Metis Beach and touched each community profoundly. While raising three children Hazel exemplified the true spirit of voluntarism in Canada starting in the early days with the Junior League of Montreal, Miss Edgar's and Miss Cramp's School, Red Feather/ Centraide, the Montreal Association for the Blind, the Garden Club of Montreal, the Royal Victoria Hospital, Fulford Residence, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, St James the Apostle and most especially the Victorian Order of Nurses (NOVA). She received many awards and commendations notably the Confederation Medal for distinguished service from Governor General Ray Natyshyn and the Lady Isabel Aberdeen award. She loved it all!!! Special heartfelt thanks to her care-giving family – Tanya Tranh, Teresita Panesa, Sevda Siljanin, Jane Yardley, Juliet Kerr and Izmet Bajramovic whose love and attention made each day easier and happier throughout the last 8 years. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Collins Clarke MacGillvray White. Funeral Tuesday June 25th at 1pm, St James the Apostle, 1439 St. Catherine Street West, Montreal. Donations in her memory may be made to NOVA Montreal 310 Victoria Avenue, suite 403, Westmount, Quebec H3Z 2M9 or as preferred.

Dear Diana & Willa,
Sara Colby told me the sad news about your Mum. I was always fond of her and you Dad too. What a vibrant couple they were! The sad reality is all the "old guard" are going. We have quite an act to follow.
With much love and my deepest sympathy.

Mrs. Harrington was and still is a shining example of the positive impact of volunteerism on the community. In her long career as a volunteer, she demonstrated an expertise in fundraising, an enthusiasm for her pet projects and an incredible tenacity that enabled her to surmount any hurdle in her way. In my years as a former executive director of VON Montréal and NOVA Montréal she inspired both frustration and admiration as she forged ahead to meet the challenges of funding and running a charitable organisation in the 21st century. Though her volunteer work ended some time ago, she left a legacy of the importance of commitment, courage, a good sense of humour and an unending determination, all qualities needed to reach a goal. She was a truly an admirable woman. I am grateful that she touched my life for a time. Please accept this expression of my sincere sympathy to Willa, Diana and families.

Willa and "Noonie". I was so sorry to read of your mother's death. As you remember, Sandy was my maid of honour at my wedding some 46 years ago. I have known Hazel since I was 12. She was truly a beautiful person. A wonderful family, a home where I spent a lot of time in my youth! My love, sympathy and thoughts are with you all.
