Helen Bergen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 7, 2017.
It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of our beloved mother, Helen Bergen.

Helen passed away peacefully at the age of 91 in Kelowna, British Columbia.

She was predeceased by her husband and love of her life, John, of 60 years; also by two brothers, Bernard and Nicolas.

She will be lovingly remembered by her 6 children and their spouses; Bernie, Bob (Marilyn), Glenn (Susan), Joyce, Gary, Earl; 12 grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

Helen was born in Melitopol, Berdjansk, USSR, the daughter of Paul and Helen Koop.

Fleeing the aftermath of war and famine, the family immigrated to Canada shortly after her birth in May 1925. Life in Canada was a struggle as the family started over. Never adverse to work, Helen helped her father run the farm while her brothers were off at WWII.

Helen and John raised their children in Quesnel, British Columbia and moved to Kelowna upon retiring, though Helen worked for many years helping manage the MCC Thrift Store, she took great joy in volunteering and gave freely of her time, joining quilting circles where she helped to make hundreds of blankets distributed to people struck by natural disasters. She was very involved with the church, Helen and John assisted with numerous fund raising events, the proceeds of which went to those most in need.

Helen enjoyed cooking with her family, gardening, the outdoors and nature.

We will miss her delicious meals (Verenike, Zweiback), her generous spirit, her sense of humour (enjoyed by her grandchildren), and her presence.

We thank her for her love and care she provided us, her selfless giving, her teaching us (mostly through example) the core values that made our family strong and that remain to guide our children.

The family wish to thank the staff at the Lake Country Manor for their compassionate care during Helens stay there.

A Celebration of Life will be held on April 29, 2017 time to be announced later.

We will remember both Helen and John with fond memories. Our kids also got to know them and looked forward to any visits with them when the came to see Sam and Helen. They were always very special in our lives and two of our favorite people.
Sam and Helen also would like to pass along greetings and condolences. They reminisce often about times spent together. Sam especially likes to talk of his twin brother and his wife.
thinking of you all.......Vic & Sue Bergen
