Helen Jeanette Lieux Gwin

Helen Jeanette Lieux Gwin, fondly known as Jean, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully Friday, August 25, 2017 surrounded by family and friends, at the Carpenter House. Jean had a charitable spirit and throughout her life she felt a strong connection to the poor and those in need, she gave generously to those less fortunate. Jean also had a fervent spiritual connection to Saint Anthony, whom she referred to fondly as her friend. In earlier years she was honored to have friends and family contact her for aid in beseeching Saint Anthony on their behalf and was blessed with amazing success in the location of misplaced items. Jean was a devout Catholic and attended Our Lady of Mercy Church, beginning in 1943 with their first service at the Mission Church. She was a graduate of Baton Rouge High as well as Louisiana State University and as a child she attended Sacred Heart School. Jean's family and friends remember fondly her engaging smile and warm personality, as well as her culinary talents. She loved to make and share pralines and her dirty rice was a holiday staple. In recent years Jean could be found assisting in the creation of giant pots of gumbo, which everyone is sure to miss. She was an avid reader and could always be counted on for her literary recommendations. Her grandchildren particularly loved to hear stories of her world travels, with Iguazu Falls, the Far East and Spain noted as her favorites. Jean and her husband Fred Gwin had three boys and resided in Old Goodwood until later in life. She is survived by her eldest son, Fred Austin Gwin III, her daughters-in-law, Kathy Sandifer Gwin and Donna Bonfanti Gwin, and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jean is preceded in death by her parents James and Camilla Patin Lieux of New Roads; husbands Fred Austin Gwin, Jr. and J. B. Chapman; brother James "Buddy" Lieux; sister Betty "Tiny" Lieux Betts; two sons, James Scott Gwin and Richard Lieux Gwin; granddaughter Piper Leigh Gwin; great-granddaughter Hailey Angelle Berry; and daughter-in-law Debbie Plaisance Gwin. The family would like to thank the staff of both Our Lady of the Lake Hospital and The Carpenter House for their selfless care, compassion and skilled assistance during Jean's final days here in her earthly home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church at 10:00am on Wednesday, August 30, 2017, preceded by a wake from 9:00am -10:00am at the Church. Interment will follow at Roselawn Cemetery in Baton Rouge. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Missionaries of Charity at Saint Agnes Catholic Church.
