Helen Mary Luhning Beloved wife of the late Walter Henry Luhning, passed away peacefully with family at her side on Oct. 26, 2009 at the age of 88 years. Helen was predeceased by her parents Max and Mary Seifert; husband Walter Luhning; brothers Fred (sister-in-law Nellie) Seifert, John Seifert, and George Seifert; brother-in-law Jack Sullivan; and Walter's family members Elsie (Ernest) Gebhardt, Louise (Victor) Duquette, Dorothea (Charles) O'Toole, Herbert (Mabel) Luhning, and Henry Luhning. Helen is lovingly remembered by her children Richard (Arlene) Luhning and their children Warren (Robyn) (great grandchildren Harrison and Trevor), and Clark (Lisa) Luhning (great grandchild Brooke); Linda (John) Irving and their children John (Keri) Irving (great grandchildren Logan and Jones), James (Karen) Irving (great grandchild Anderson), and Joel Irving (great grandchild Hannah); Rodney (Norma) Luhning and their children Nathan (Alison) Luhning (great grandchildren Halcyon and Ginny), and Holly Luhning; Randy (Kathy) Luhning and their children Eric (Kate) Luhning, Collette (David) Stilborn, Nicole (Tony) Gill (great grandchild Jacob), and Kiel Luhning; Lorna Weisbrod and her children Craig Weisbrod, Megan Weisbrod and Kate-Lynn Weisbrod; siblings Ernie (Gwen) Seifert, Elsa Sullivan, Jim (Opal) Seifert, Walter (Marilyn) Seifert, Charlie (Faye) Seifert; sisters-in-law Theresa Seifert and Lottie Seifert; and Walter's family Alfred (Margaret) Luhning, Julie Luhning, Hertha (Vic) Rachul, Irma (Anatoly) Bulani, and Alma (Mike) Ponchuk; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Helen Seifert was born and raised on a farm near Disley, Sask. on Feb. 13, 1921. She was the eldest daughter in a family of nine children. Helen's mother died at the age of 36 years when Helen was 14 years old. Helen loved her time at school as a child but when her mother passed away, Helen left her studies at Little Lake School and assumed an adult role in helping care for the young Seifert family. Helen married Walter Luhning on Dec. 2, 1942. They shared 44 years together on their farm near Lumsden, Sask. Busy years were spent raising five children and enjoying the work of farming. Helen had a garden every year until the last two years of her life, and her love of gardening was imparted to her children and grandchildren. Helen's life was rich with family and community activities. She enjoyed being involved with sport days, ball games, curling, Homemaker Club, and the U.C.W. She taught Sunday school, provided leadership for C.G.I.T, and was treasurer for the Lumsden Band Association. As an adult, she completed her grade twelve and continued her love of learning through correspondence and community classes. Helen instilled her values of education within her family. Children were always a cherished part of Helen's life. Her long life was blessed with many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Helen unfailingly supported all in their community activities and events. After Walter's passing, Helen remained on the farm until November, 2008 and then moved to Queen Victoria Estates in Regina. Helen made many new friends there and enjoyed being a member of the QVE Shuffleboard Club. Helen`s life touched all of us in a very special way. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. The funeral service will be held Saturday Oct. 31, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at the St. Andrew's United Church in Lumsden, Sask. Interment will be at the Disley Cemetery following the service. Flowers are most gratefully decline. If desired, donations can be made in Helen's memory to the Disley Cemetery Association, Lumsden, Sask. (S0G 3C0) or a charity of your choice. I will always remember the time I spent with Auntie Helen at their farm as a youngster; taming cats in the big red barn, catching crickets in the basement, sliding down the stairs and picking peas from the garden.

As an adult, I enjoyed visits on the phone, reading her Christmas cards as well as our visits together at Agribition in Regina when she took time to watch Daryn & I at the Rodeo.

Auntie Helen was a great person and a great Aunt; always thinking of others. She will be dearly missed but here memories will make us smile.

I'll always remember Helen from my days working at Cal's confectionary in Lumsden (1993-1995). She was a frequent customer with a subscription to the Leader Post and regularly got groceries. I got to know her as a warm and friendly woman with strong character. My heart goes out to the Luhning families and I wish you peace in these hard times.
