SHEERIN, Helen M. Helen M. Sheerin, 71 of East Dennis, MA died Sunday (December 9, 2007), with her family at her side. She was born in South Grafton, MA and later moved to Worcester, MA where she met and married her husband Philip Thomas Sheerin (predeceased October 2006). She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Worcester State Teachers College in Worcester, MA and a Master's Degree in Psychology and Counseling from Assumption College. She also holds a 6th year degree in Education. She served as Assistant Director of the Worcester Girls' Club, was Activity Director for the Worcester Parks and Recreation Department, Physical Education Director for the Greenvale YMCA in Worcester, MA. Helen and her family relocated to New Britain in 1967 where she raised her family and became very involved in the community. She was appointed Program Director of the Bristol Girl's Club in Bristol and after that started her tenure as an Elementary School Teacher and Reading Consultant with the New Britain school system where she remained for her entire career. Helen was active in many areas of education, including the appointment to a national committee to review and approve federally funded grants and served as Secretary and Vice President of the New Britain Federation of Teachers. She was an advocate for the underprivileged and she took great pride in providing her talent, time and treasures for worthy causes. Helen and her family loved Cape Cod and owned a home in Dennis, MA where they would spend the summers and where she and her husband retired in 1997. While she loved the beach, her greatest love was for her husband, children and grandchildren. Helen leaves her cherished children, Kathleen Sheerin Polaske and Ronald, of Berlin, Eileen Sheerin Levoy of Sudbury, MA, Cynthia Sheerin Roche and John of Portsmouth, RI and Patrick Sheerin and Alice of Newport, RI. She also leaves her beloved grandchildren- Benjamin Zanghi, Lindsay and Annie Levoy, Tyler, Liam and Patrick Roche, Thomas and Spencer Polaske, Maggie, Michael and Andrew Sheerin. She also leaves one sister Louise Brown of Columbia, MD, brother and sister in law, Bernie and Joan Foley of Worcester, MA. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her parents, Beatrice Garback and Henry Such. Visitation will be held Thursday, December 13, from 5 - 8 p.m. in Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 729 Route 134, South Dennis. A Funeral Mass will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of the Cape Parish, Stoney Brook Rd, Brewster, followed by a burial in Woodside Cemetery, Summer St., Yarmouth Port.

I was so sorry to learn of Helen's death. We worked together as level Vice Presidents of the New Britain Federation of Teachers in the mid 1980's. Many of us remember her fondly.
