Helga Small Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 7, 2025.

Helga Hoagland Small passed away on July 28, 2025, at age 88. She is greatly missed by her family and friends, but we are glad she is at peace. Helga was born on December 27, 1937, in Dallas, TX. Helga lived for laughter, learning, and love. She was a beloved daughter to Ruth and Harold Hoagland, and she is survived by her dear sisters, Anne Janine Kelso and Diana Hoagland Erdmann. Helga has two daughters of whom she was so proud, Christina Hannon and Jennifer Small, and her lovely granddaughter, Hollie Hannon.

Helga loved to travel, exploring many countries on most continents, particularly enjoying the Galapagos Islands and Costa Rica. Helga was caring-she crocheted hats for children, intelligent-she finished her crosswords in ink, and she was funny-quick witted and laughed easily. She found comfort in a life-long trust in Christ and joy in her Episcopal church. She now has eternity to bird watch, pet dogs and cats, solve jigsaw and crossword puzzles, ride horses, read books, listen to music, and dance effortlessly.

She studied nutrition at Ohio State University (she made sure her family ate their vegetables) and earned a teaching degree from Mobile College. Helga enthusiastically tutored English reading and comprehension for some years.

A Celebration of Life service will be held in Helga's honor at the Bring's Broadway Chapel in Tucson, AZ at 2 p.m., Thursday, August 14, 2025. If you wish to donate in her memory, please consider The National Audubon Society as well as St. Mathew's Episcopal Church in Tucson.
