Henry Vick Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 7, 2005.
Oviedo, Fla. - A memorial service for Henry M. Vick, 92, of Oviedo, Fla., will be held Saturday, Sept. 17, at 2 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Casselberry, Fla. A special Sons of Norway Service will immediately follow. Mr. Vick passed away Aug. 27, 2005, at Rio Pinar Health Care Center of Orlando in the presence of his family. Henry Milford Vick, son of John and Sophie (Opdahl) Vick, was born May 30, 1913, in rural Sargent County, N.D. He and his family later moved to the Forbes area where they were engaged in farming. He was united in marriage to Isabel Smith on July 29, 1936, and they made their home farming in the Forbes area until 1943, when Henry purchased the Conoco Service Station in Forbes. He later became a full-time rural mail carrier for the western routes, a position he held for 31 years. He and his young family moved to Ellendale, N.D., in 1955, when he took on the additional duties of transporting the mail to Forbes in addition to his 65-mile route. In 1973 Henry and Isabel retired to Oviedo, Fla., where they have since resided. Mr. Vick was a long-time member and elder of the Presbyterian Church. A member of the Ellendale Masonic Lodge for 49 years, he served as its Worshipful Master in 1965. He was a member of Yelduz Shrine Temple of Aberdeen and later The Bahia Temple of Orlando, Fla. Mr. Vick served as the Scoutmaster for the Forbes Boy Scouts. A member of Ellendale Country Club, he served as its president in the 1960s. He was a member of the Ellendale Volunteer Fire Department, the National Rural Letter Carriers Association, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and The Sons of Norway. Mr. Vick enjoyed the outdoors. He was an avid hunter in his early years and later spent many hours fishing and teaching his grandchildren to fish at their lake home on Lake Lida, Minn. He enjoyed playing golf into his 70s and watching it on TV when he could no longer play. He will be remembered by his patrons for his commitment to their mail delivery, regardless of the weather or road conditions, as well as his willingness to assist them by bringing needed items from town, anything from medicine to machine parts. Grateful to have shared in his life are his wife of 69 years, Isabel, and their four children and their families: Jerome and Patricia Vick of Oviedo, Fla., Robert and Hestor (Vick) Lindberg of Bonita Springs, Fla., David Vick of Charleston, W.V., and Porter and Debra (Vick) VanZandt of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; seven grandchildren: Lisa Grubba, Erik Vick, Kirstin Mooney, Robert Lindberg, Henry Vick, Sophie Vick and Magdalene Vick; and three great-grandchildren: Andrew and Reid Grubba, and Jacob Vick. Mr. Vick was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Theodore. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be made to Cancer Care Center of Winter Park, 200 N. Lakemont Ave., Winter Park, FL 32792 or Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2641 Red Bug Lake Road, Casselberry, FL 32707.

Sorry to hear of Hank's death, I have many memories of your whole family from when we lived at Forbes. Have kept up with things since Ken has been running David's columns here and I read them.

Our thoughts are with you in your loss.
