MOUNT PLEASANT MILLS - Herbert Norman Apple, 76, of Fairview Drive, went home to be with his Lord and Savior at 5:34 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2005, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where he was a patient since July 27. His passing was sudden and unexpected.
He was born Sept. 12, 1928, in Richfield, Snyder County, a son of the late Cloyd and Stella (Derr) Apple. On Dec. 17, 1949, he married the former Aretta A. Sierer, who survives. They were married for more than 55 years.
Mr. Apple was educated at Stahl's Grammar schoolhouse.
In 1949, he began a fruit business in Mount Pleasant Mills, known as the Apple and Mengel Fruit Farm. He continued this endeavor until his retirement in 2000.
Mr. Apple was a member of Richfield Mennonite Church, Richfield, where he was also a Sunday school teacher.
He served on the board of directors for Swineford National Bank.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are one son, Phillip C. Apple and his wife Barbara L. of Mount Pleasant Mills; one daughter, Kay A. Leitzel and her husband Gary L. of Mount Pleasant Mills; five grandchildren, Andrew Leitzel, Michael Leitzel, Stephanie Apple, and twins Danielle and Michelle Apple; two brothers, Elmer Apple and his wife Arlene, and Albert Apple and his wife Erma, both of Richfield; five sisters, Mary Hoffman and her husband Nevin of Evandale, Olive Lauver-Hibbs and her husband Clarence of Mount Pleasant Mills, Glendora Lauver of Mifflintown, Norma Sheaffer and her husband Gerald of Richfield, and Janet Apple of McAlisterville; and three generations of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Reno Apple, and by two sisters, Naomi Graybill and Helen M. Hoffman on June 21.
Family and friends will gather for the viewing from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at the Richfield Mennonite Church, Church Street, Richfield, where the funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday by Pastor Paul J. Beech III.
Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran and Reformed Cemetery, Mount Pleasant Mills.
Should friends desire, memorial gifts may be directed in loving memory of Mr. Apple to the Richfield Mennonite Church, RR1 Box 11, Richfield, PA 17086.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the George P. Garman Funeral Home Inc., Mount Pleasant Mills.
