Herbert Barnes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 23, 2015.
Herbert Edwin (Ted) Barnes. August 30, 1928 – October 22, 2015
Retiree, 40+ Years General Motors. Born, raised and lifetime resident of Oshawa, ON. Passed away at Lakeridge Health while under Palliative Care. Ted leaves behind his wife of 67 years, Edna (Gower); his daughters Sally Lloyd (Doug) and Lisa Jones, daughter-in-law Dolly. Pre-deceased by his son David; parents Jennie and Harry, and 13 siblings. Loving grandfather to David's Sara, Carrie (Scott) and Ted Barnes; Lloyd daughter's Amanda (Darryl) and Brianne (Joel); and to Dawson Jones. Great-grandfather to Austyn, Blake and Caden. Ted will also be missed by his extended family, dear friends and wonderful neighbours. Ted started with "the Boys Group" at General Motors when he was just 16 years old, and then took a pipe-fitting apprenticeship as he was allowed time off to play baseball. Ted played for several winning teams over the years and his McCallum Transport A Team was inducted into in the Oshawa Sport's Hall of Fame for their exceptional stats. He also holds the Right Fielder position for the Oshawa Legionaire's ALL DECADE team of the 1950's. His career culminated with the Oshawa Merchants. Fittingly, he also met his future wife Edna while practicing in Alexandra Park. Ted remained active in many sports after marriage. He umpired baseball, played hockey, golf and had been a long-time member of the Oshawa (Kirby) Ski Club and Oshawa Curling Club. He retired a proud employee of GM as a Construction/Maintenance Foreman after 42 years of service. In his retirement he enjoyed many years at the cottage, with family and friends on Beech Lake in Canarvon. He loved nothing more than to help others with his handyman skills and continued to do so right up until the last several months of his life. In accordance with Ted's wishes cremation has taken place. Open invitation to drop in on Sunday, November 8, from 1 - 4 p.m., upstairs at the Oshawa Curling Club, located at 226 Bond Street for a Celebration of Ted's Life. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Fund or the Durham Humane Society would be appreciated. Condolences may be also be left online through the Oshawa Funeral Home.

I'm so sorry Lisa. Please take some comfort in the heartfelt knowledge that you had a father and Dad that loved and cared for you.
You're not alone in the sense that they are with you.. They are.
It's the absence of their presence that kills us... But know that the folks who love you are present with your grief.

Grief can be isolating .... In that ... We feel very alone .... I get that.

Hugs. Many hugs. To you and Daw.

As a young boy growing up in the 1950's Ted was my first baseball hero. What a great player he was. I only met Ted a couple of times but what a nice gentleman he was. Sincerest condolences to Ted's family.
