Herbert Edelman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 8 to Apr. 9, 2023.
We are very sad to annouce that our father, Herb Edelman, 90 years young, passed away Monday, April 3, 2023.

Our dad was a man of few words and those words were never about himself. He enjoyed his work to the end, which was fixing bicycles and interacting with passersby outside of his cluttered little shop in Peekskill on North Division Street while he was working. He had been in the community for at least the past 50 years.

Dad turned 90 last September. He was a member of that greatest generation -- work until the end. Truly the end of an era. He began working while in middle school, delivering papers and helping out on a milk delivery truck in Putnam Valley, where he grew up. After graduation from Peekskill High School, he did a tour in the US Navy during the Korean conflict. When he was discharged, he worked for Mr. Soskel in downtown Peekskill for a while before going into business for himself which was what he had set as his life goal.

He started out in Brewster, until the property was needed for the construction of 684. He packed up and moved to the Hampton Oaks Shopping Center where he stayed until he set up his shop on Division Street where he remained until he passed.

He was able to live his life doing what he loved the most and and all who knew him understood that about him. He enjoyed family gatherings and always had control of the grill at cookouts. He was most content to watch everyone having a good time and enjoying his cooking. At each outing, he would have a few jokes to share, at which he did most of the laughing. He had a beautiful smile and his blue eyes would just sparkle when he laughed.

He is survived by his two children, daughter Ronni in Fishkill, son Jay (Syndie) in Ulster Park, granddaughter Sarah May and great granddaughter Althea Winterose in Ludlow, Vermont. Also younger brother Raymond and his family in Huntington Beach, California.

Dad, we love you and miss you terribly. You were truly one of a kind.

I am so sorry to here this news. I remember Herb well. I happened upon him selling bikes on North Division around 2004. I bought 2 beautiful bikes from him, a Schwinn woodlands and a hard rock specialized. Both were beautifully repaired and restored by him. He also sold me a good bike helmet and a bike rack. Nice man, very polite and spoke to me graciously. He was different- always acted like a gentleman, you would think he had walked out of a Dicken's novel. Both of those bikes were stolen over the years. I was just wondering if he might still be around, as he age was indeterminable and he seemed likely the kind to go down in his boots. Sorry to hear-condolences to the family.

Sorry for your loss, I remember Herb well. Growing up in Highland Park riding our bikes he was an endless supply of chain master links when we were kids. He had everything needed to get us back riding... RIP

My condolences to the family. I worked for Herb at the Hampton shop on Division St. In my teenage years. That's where I learned how to treat people in business. He was so polite and humble I'll never forget those days.
Thank you Herb for all you taught me.

What a specially caring man Herb was. Always quick to say and show his love. You can never forget your first encounter with such a soul.
I hold him lovingly in my memory, Alba
