Without Mr. Gross, I wouldn't have passed calc. Without that, I wouldn't have the degree and career that I enjoy now. I kept revisiting those videos over the years to keep myself fresh. I wanted to meet Mr. Gross one day to thank him, but now I know that I won't get the chance. This page is the closest I'll get now. Thank you Mr. Gross!

I met Herb when I was 14 years old. My grandmother Flora O'Hearn worked with him at Bunker Hill and she adored him. I was having issues with Algebra and he offered to tutor me on his own time. Later on, when I became a student there, he became my advisor, both before and after my grandmother's passing. He has been a warm and truly benevolent force in the universe for all these years. He was always my mentor and my friend. I will miss him very much. All my love to the Gross family, who themselves stand as a shining testament to who Herb was a human being.

A professor, a mentor, a gracious person. One of the shooting stars you may see in the night sky will be his.

Herbert's existence was a blessing for this world, and a guide to many who inhabit it. No words can even describe the influence he had on me through his lectures alone. I only wish I could've met him to say my thanks in person, and how indebted I am to him. So- I will say it here, thank you so much, Professor.

Herb used his gifts selflessly and with much Love to uplift his fellow man. May we all endeavor to the same.

This is very personal. He often checked for comments on his youtube videos and replied as much as he could. His videos continue to inspire a new generation. What a brilliant way to leave a legacy.

My best wishes for his next journey. He was (is) a fantastic teacher. Whenever I wrote him he reverted. It is a personal loss.

I was saddened to learn of Herbs passing. He was a special friend of mine and of the college. Herb freely shared the instructional materials that he developed and was concerned about every student and faculty member that used them. Many people have learned and benefitted from his work, talent, and generosity. May God provide comfort and peace to his family and all who loved him! I only learned today about Herb's passing. Louise, you and your family have my deepest sympathy. I will miss him. Herb's accomplishments illustrate what kind of man he was. He defined an era which could never be repeated.
I was lucky to sit next to Herb on the dais when he keynoted the AMATYC meeting in 1993, as AMATYC's founding president. He spoke for 50 minutes, the allotted time, and received the only standing ovation that I recall for a keynote speaker. When he sat down he looked at me and said "That was great, I thought they were only going to give me 20 minutes!"
His message of "Teacher as Coach" described a holistic approach to educating community college students with a fervor and humor that was unique. His commitment to our students was palpable. I could write for hours, as could many.

I saw Herb Gross speak at a math conference in California when I was a new instructor in the 1970s. After his presentation I said to myself, "That's the kind of teacher I want to be." I got to know Herb in the years that followed and if he was speaking at a conference I was attending, I went to his presentation. In 2015 I was awarded the first Herb Gross Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Mathematics Association for Two-Year Colleges for my service to the two-year college mathematics community. I don't think the people giving the award knew that Herb was my role model for how to teach mathematics. And today, I still try to be the kind of teacher he was. The whole mathematics teaching community will miss him.
