Herbert Woods Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 22, 2025.
Herbert Alfred Woods, 91, of El Paso, TX died March 5th, 2025, after a very brief illness.

"Al" to some, "Jay" or "Woody" to others, was born in Glendale CA, May 18th, 1933, to the parents of Herbert and Effie (Black) Woods. He moved to El Paso in 1946 and graduated from Austin High School and received a Bachelor of Business Administration from Texas Western College (UTEP).

Jay was an entrepreneur owning multiple successful businesses in El Paso including Tree Lawn Service and Carpenter Motors. His passion for tennis and bridge saw him involved in multiple local organizations as well as regional and national tournaments. Late in life he became a trusted, endeared and patient bridge instructor at El Paso's Decker Bridge Center. He cherished the game, and his instruction spread his love of the game to new people. He was also a Trustee of the McKee Foundation overseeing donations to non-profit organizations throughout the El Paso area.

Jay was preceded in death by his sister Beth Geiser, of Glendale, CA. He is survived by his son Paul Woods and his wife Christine, children Isabella and John-Paul of Germantown, TN and his daughter Juliet O'Shoney and her husband Joel, children Claire and Sutton of Georgetown, TX.

Jay loved El Paso and the people of the city. He never met a stranger and always dreamed of bigger and better things. He was a trusted and gracious friend, teacher and mentor to many.

A memorial service will be held June 20th in El Paso at a location that will be announced later. Donations to any of the following organizations in his honor would be greatly appreciated. El Paso Symphony Orchestre or the El Paso Symphony Youth Orchestre and the "Decker Bridge Club" - American Contract Bridge League unit 159 PO Box 3080 El Paso, TX 79923.
