Published by Legacy Remembers on May 31, 2025.
Howard Seymour Rosenfield, 94, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2025, in Fanwood, New Jersey. Born on May 14, 1930, in Brooklyn, New York, Howard was the son of Rose and Fred Rosenfield. He graduated from Erasmus Hall High School and went on to earn an Associate in Applied Science degree in Mechanical Technology from the New York State Institute of Applied Arts & Sciences. Howard dedicated his professional life to engineering, working with distinction at two prominent firms. He began his career at Syska & Hennessy in 1951 and remained there until 1959. He then joined Segner & Dalton, where he contributed significantly for over two decades until 1982. Howard returned to Syska & Hennessy that same year and continued his work there until his retirement in 1997. Among his many accomplishments, he was especially proud of his contributions to the restoration of Ellis Island, where he played a key role in designing the mechanical and electrical systems-an enduring legacy tied to one of America's most historic landmarks. Beyond his professional achievements, Howard led a rich and fulfilling personal life. He was married to Barbara Rosenfield, who predeceased him. Together they built a loving family that brought him immense joy and pride. He is lovingly remembered by his daughters Audrey and her husband Lee, and Fran and her husband Frank; grandchildren Melissa and her husband Jay, Ian and his wife Julia, Meredith and her husband Gideon, Evan and his wife Jenny; and great-grandchildren Sam, Max, Tess, Hazel, Sebastian, Alana, and Johnathan. Howard had a deep passion for travel and adventure. He enjoyed scuba diving and had a keen eye for photography-interests that reflected his curiosity about the world around him. Those who knew him remember him as a caring, thoughtful, and loving person who always took genuine interest in the lives of others. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
