Hugh Haugland Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 7 to Aug. 10, 2009.
Mount Laurier - Hugh Haugland, 44, was killed Wednesday morning in a helicopter accident while on assignment for CTV News. He is survived by his daughters Yvonne (19), Lianne (14) and their mother Lynn Rainville, and by his partner Francine Maillé and her daughters Carolane (15) and Mélanie (12), as well as mother Nancy Peck, father Bill Haugland, stepmother Linda Haugland, sister Heidi, and brothers Matt and James.

When the tragedy occurred, Hugh, a CTV News camera operator, was filming the aftermath of severe tornadoes that had passed through the region the previous day. Moments before the accident, he was photographed climbing into the ill-fated helicopter with a cast on his arm – the result of a recent mountain bike mishap – and a smile on his face. He wore both because he died the way he lived, with energy, enthusiasm, and a lightness of being that enriched the lives of everyone who knew him. Hugh was passionate about many things: cooking, astronomy, the outdoors. Above all, he lived for his two beautiful girls.

A current resident of Boisbriand, Hugh spent his childhood years in the Lake Champlain region of northern Vermont. The woods and waters captured Hugh's imagination, and he relished any opportunity to spend a week, a day, or even an afternoon, in the region. On any given Saturday morning, when most of us were still asleep, Hugh could be found building a treehouse with his daughter, cutting a path to the family cabin, or canoeing through the reeds and mist. We all dream, but Hugh lived his dreams everyday in deliberate and meaningful ways.

Hugh's passion was equally evident in a career spanning 24 years and countless adventures. From Hurricane Katrina and the 9/11 terrorist attacks to his award-winning footage of the Saguenay floods, Hugh always got the shot, and the shot always told the story that needed to be told. Hugh's colleagues remember him as a tireless and committed worker whose compassion and kindness were reflected through his camera lens.

For his family, Hugh is and always will be watching sunsets at the Hill, dreaming of time spent with the girls, hiking off to the next big project and flashing a grin that hints at a life well-lived.

Hugh was respected; he was loved; he will be missed.

Family, friends and colleagues will gather at a memorial service at the Mount Royal Funeral Complex in the Mount Royal Cemetary at 7:30 p.m. Monday, August 10. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hugh Haugland Memorial Scholarship Fund. For more information, call 514-848-2424 ext. 3817.

Dear Haugland Family,
So very sorry to hear of Hugh's accident and your loss. I went to school at John Abbot and have many fond and happy memories of Hugh. He loved to laugh, and make people laugh...he was also very loyal to his friends. My thoughts and my prayers will always be with you.

Dear Haugland Family, I wish to convey my sincerest sympathies. Mr.Haugland, I was friends with Hugh (pretty good friends)in Highgate Springs between 1976 and 1983 when my parents (John & Gail Lindsay from Chateauguay, PQ) used to rent a cottage from the Campbell's for the summer. Hugh and I would communicate via phone and letters during the winter months in anticipation of us hanging out together, riding our bikes around the "loop", lounging in front of Martin's Store, hanging out at the beach listening to "CKGM" and running into the water with our cut off jean shorts, etc... BTW, the first time I was ever allowed to sleep over night in a tent was at your place and Hugh's Aunt's - these are all memories I cherish from my childhood! The last time I spoke with Hugh was about six years ago and it was nice to catch up - we spoke for about two hours ...just catching up. I advised him that I had lost my mom to ovarian cancer and he re-called all kinds of stories about her and my grandmother -- some 25 yrs later, what a boy, what a friend, what a man, what a dad and what a SON!

God Bless.

Dear Bill, Nancy and family,

Bill, not likely you remember me but we met many times in the days of Mike Godwin and Cynthia Drummond. I didn't have children then, but I do now and it causes my hear to break when I hear that a parent has lost a child.

My MOST sincere condolences.

I met you, Bill, for the first time very recently. You came into studio at CBC Radio to talk about your novel. The interview went swimmingly. You talked about your book, but for the most part told wonderful, entertaining stories about your broadcasting career; especially your days as a radio and TV reporter. It was a slice of Montreal from the 60s and 70s that I relished. I was also struck by what a courteous and gentle man you are; rare traits in this business. I also got the impression that family is paramount. From what I’ve read about your son Hugh, he was much like his Dad.
I have two children of my own. I can’t imagine the pain you’re feeling. The loss of a child must be overwhelming. I know those strong family ties will see you through this difficult time. Bill, from my family to yours, our deepest sympathies. We’re thinking about you.

My early childhood years are when I remember Hugh the most. He was living in Saint Albans, VT at the time and he used to hang out with my older brother Robin. I would tag along because I had a huge crush on Hugh. Hugh was alway so nice and would stick up for me when my brother would pick on me and would yell at me stay way from his friends.

My deepest sympathies to the Haugland family.

I met Hugh about 4 weeks back at the General Hospital Emergency where he was waiting to get a cast on his arm; I was there with my mother who was waiting to see a doctor. We chatted quite a bit while we both waited. Despite just meeting him I could easily see he was a real people person who loved his work and family. He never stopped smiling the entire time and even managed to help me unwrap some cookies for my mother despite his broken wrist. A truly wonderful person.

Rest in Peace Hugh

Hugh,

I know it sounds corny but you truly are a child of the universe.

We'll miss you, but knowing how much you connected with the outdoors- I'll think of you every time I look at a majestic mountain, a hopeful sunrise, an intricate snowflake or a starlit sky. And that's just the vis- never mind the awesome soundtrack that will go with it!

Thanks for casting the warm glow of your beautiful energy and boundless friendship on all of us while you were here. The world feels a little bit colder without you in it.

Wish you were here,

xoxo,
