IAN BUCKWOLD Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix from Jul. 16 to Jul. 17, 2013.

BUCKWOLD, IAN STANLEY
It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden death of Ian Buckwold on Sunday, July 14, 2013. Ian is survived by his loving family: wife Mary Ellen; daughters Jessica (Kacper, Marcus and Ruth Jaskowiak) and Laura (Justin Holmes); son Alvin; brother, Bruce (Tamara); sisters Marney Buckwold and Patsy Landa (Benny); sisters- in-law Faith Caesar (Bob) and Glenda Nieman; brothers-in-law Pat Nieman (Annette) and Jack Nieman (Rick); step-sister, Phyllis Stoffman; step-brothers Larry Stoffman (Connie Broatch) and Danny Stoffman (Judy); many cherished nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Ian was predeceased by his father Alvin, mother Ruth, step-father Isaac Stoffman and, recently, his beloved brother-in-law Richard Nieman.
Ian was born on October 30, 1948 and raised in Saskatoon, where he completed elementary and high school. He continued his education at the University of Toronto where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree, followed by a law degree from the University of British Columbia. Ian and Mary Ellen were married on August 3, 1978. Ian began his legal career working with Legal Aid in northern Saskatchewan. He moved into private practice in Saskatoon, first with the Goldenberg law firm and then as a partner at Gauley & Company (now McDougall Gauley) before joining the Concorde Group of Companies, where he worked until his recent retirement.
Ian was a dedicated community volunteer and devoted many hours to many causes. He worked at Camp Easter Seal as a young man and throughout his life remained committed to organizations and activities supporting those who face special challenges in life. Ian and Mary Ellen were instrumental in the creation of the Les and Irene Dubé Center for Mental Health and were co-chairs of the Board.
Ian cherished his family above all else. He loved life and found great joy in sharing it with others. Ian drew everyone within range into his enthusiasms and interests, which included cycling, boating, golfing, motorcycling, literature and much else. With Mary Ellen, he was a spontaneous and unstinting host to many at their homes in Saskatoon, Chandler (AZ) and Emma Lake. Ian was funny and generous and was always there for his friends and family. He was a devoted grandfather to much beloved Marcus and Ruth.
Donations to the Schizophrenia Society of Saskatchewan - Saskatoon Chapter would be appreciated in lieu of flowers. The funeral will be held on Friday, July 19th at 10:00 a.m. at Agudas Israel Synagogue, (715 McKinnon Avenue, Saskatoon.) Condolences may be sent to [email protected]. Arrangements have been entrusted to Saskatoon Funeral Home. 244-5577

To Mary Ellen & family. On behalf of the Schizophrenia Society's Partnership Program I want to offer you my condolences. Ian (along with Mary Ellen) was someone who made a difference in the area of mental health. Many people are too ignorant or fearful to make a difference but not Ian. He was a light in our community. What has occurred is devastating especially for your family. Still, something positive can come from something even as unfortunate as this.

We are hoping for a full recovery for Alvin and healing for all those affected by the loss of Ian. We are also hoping for better treatment options and initiatives for people with chronic mental illness so this can be avoided in the future. We stand behind ALL of your family.

Sincerely,

Jamie Sommerfeld
