Ian King Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 25, 2023.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Ian Joseph King, who departed this world on December 5, 2023 at 77 years old. He left us peacefully in Jacksonville, FL - surrounded by his loved ones.

Ian was born on June 3, 1946 in Longford, Ireland to John (Sean) Francis King and Anna Ester (Nancy) Kelleher King. The oldest of his siblings, he grew up in Ireland, where he attended University College Dublin (UCD), receiving a bachelor of science degree in physical and inorganic chemistry. His time at UCD fostered a lifelong passion for learning, reading, and educating others about the physical/natural world.

His sense of adventure and passion for knowledge inspired him to cross the Atlantic Ocean for the United States, where he obtained his Doctorate of Philosophy in the Department of Chemistry at Fordham University in New York City. Knowledge was his power to inspire positivity in those who he encountered.

In 1982, Ian married Jean Petruny King, and together had 3 children - twins Ronan Francis and Richella Georgette (Theil), and Orlaith Jean. He is survived by siblings: Deirdre Burns (Michael), Anne King, Barbara Grimes (Richard), Harry King (Avril), Colin King (Dara), Fionan King (Hilary), and grandchildren Kiera and Isla Theil.

A scientist at Westinghouse (Siemens), Ian dedicated his career to pushing the boundaries of technology. Outside of his professional life, Ian was deeply passionate about reading and learning. As a fierce advocate for empowering others, he was fulfilled through providing knowledge by tutoring others. Through University of Central Florida's (UCF) Learning Institute For Elders, Ian joined a community of lifelong learners to study and further causes, including gerontology.

Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 1992, Ian fought his battle with MS through activism. He was influential in the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Central Florida, where he led the effort to improve the lives of those suffering from MS. Throughout his life, his ambition was to contribute towards advancing the search for a cure for Multiple Sclerosis. Enthusiastically participating in trials and studies, he was well aware that it wouldn't alleviate his own MS. He did so with the optimism of providing valuable research and results to improve the future for others diagnosed with MS.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the National MS Society in his honor.

A memorial service celebration for Ian's life will be held at Dubsdread Country Club in Orlando, FL on Saturday, January 13, 2024 beginning at 11:00 AM.

Thank you to everyone near and far who reached out with kind words, shared memories, and condolences. Our family is forever grateful and we know this is exactly how Ian/Dad/Grandad would want to be celebrated.

Ian lived with us for a short while when he attended Fordham. My father was Ian´s uncle Henry (Harry) married to Bridget (Betty) King. I´m Colm King, one of six siblings: Harry, Joe, Kevin, Vinny and Sharon.
Ian was such a kind and calm person with a quick wit and the most interesting stories. He could talk, but you always wanted to hear more.
I regret not hearing more stories when Ian and my Dad were chatting about my father and his brother Sean growing up; it seems they could be quite the hell raisers.
Ian would come home and hang his shirt back up in the closet and it looked as fresh as when he put it on in the morning.
He´d get two days of use. My Mom would ask us why we couldn´t be like Ian and come home fresh and clean, instead of as if we´d gone to war.
Our house would have put Animal House to shame with our unruly behavior. I´m pretty sure that´s why Ian left after a short while to live temporarily with his aunts Sadie & Lily in search of some peace and quiet.
Although 11 years older than I was, Ian impressed me as such a kind and considerate person, but no matter how hard I´ve tried, I´ll never get two days use out of my shirts.
Ian will always be in our thoughts and prayers,
Colm

I was greatly saddened by Ian´s departure from this life.

Ian was a wonderful and true friend - "best man" at my wedding, "apartment-mate", confidant, advisor, travel companion and a great buddy in science.

We shared fabulous times together over many years before he went "Stateside".

Thereafter it was so enjoyable to visit him in Florida and a privilege to be present at his daughter Richella´s wedding in Clearwater in 2011.

Despite being separated by the Atlantic Ocean we spoke regularly.

We shared many moments where we caught up with each others ongoing experiences, family happenings and life"s "ups and downs".

He bore his illness with great dignity and courage and was a role model for anyone so afflicted.

I will miss his friendship enormously and will cherish the memory of that friendship forever.

My deepest condolences to Jean, Richella, Ronan and Orla.

May Ian rest in peace.

I met Ian back in 2015 during my last years of high school. At that time, I was taking calculus for the first time and needed extra help to get through my classes. Not only did Ian help me pass those classes, but he also shaped my trajectory towards becoming an engineer. He offered advice and words of encouragement that influenced my mindset as a college student, giving me the confidence to keep pushing forward. Even now, Ian´s words and teachings still guide me as a working professional in aerospace engineering. I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to learn from such a gifted and kind person.

Always in my memories,
Reilly

Ronan and family, I send my deepest condolences and sympathy. Ian was one-of-a-kind. I will remember his sharp with and passion for learning. Most of all, I will remember how he loved you all and especially how he doted on JJ the Jack Russell.
