Ilene Fern McLaughlin

Ilene Fern McLaughlin, 78, passed away in Phoenix on March 20, 2024. Described as "legendary" and "hilarious," Ilene--also known simply as "Ma"--was known for her sense of humor, direct communication style, and adventurous approach to life. Born in 1946 to Leon and Mary Epstein, she grew up in Boston and graduated from the Jeremiah E. Burke High School for Girls in 1963. She then attended Lake Forest College, where she made lifelong friends. A Spanish major, she studied in Spain during the Francoist dictatorship. She graduated from Lake Forest in 1968 and regularly attended reunions thereafter.

She raised three kids in Scituate, Massachusetts. Looking for a life and career change, she earned a master's degree in library science from Simmons College and planned a move out west. In 1993, she relocated to Phoenix, where she would live for the next 30 years. She was a reference librarian at Arizona State University's Hayden Library for more than 15 years and also held a librarian position at AGSIM's Thunderbird campus. Professors, students, and colleagues alike appreciated her extensive knowledge and straightforward manner.

She was known for her generous nature and the-more-the-merrier philosophy around parties and holiday gatherings. A rock-solid support system, she was always there to talk. She laughed easily, and it was contagious. She had a strong independent streak and lived the way she wanted: When she made up her mind to do something big, like move across the country, she had the courage to make it happen.

She is survived by her children, Jennifer (Rob) McLaughlin and Julie (Matt) McLaughlin of Phoenix, and John (Carey) McLaughlin of Townsend, GA; grandchildren, Aimee, Madeleine, and Leo; sister, Joyce (Paul) Fitzgerald of Naples, FL; beloved cat, Flash; and many friends. She was truly one of a kind. A celebration of life is planned for the fall in Phoenix. Donations in her name may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of the Valley.
