Ira T. Distenfield, a tenacious and visionary leader who modeled perseverance to all he touched, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was 78.

Ira is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Distenfield; his children, Bill Malina and his wife Rhonda, Robert Malina and his wife Fox, Jennifer Distenfield, David Distenfield, Derek Distenfield and his wife Olesya, Dustin Distenfield, and Dawnie Distenfield and her husband Levi.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Josephine and Leo Distenfield, and his brother-in-law, Stuart Duhl.

Born on June 14, 1946, Ira lived a life defined by purpose, perseverance, and profound impact. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1974 before launching an extraordinary career in both business and public service.

Ira spent over two decades at Smith Barney, where he rose to become the top-producing Branch Manager and pioneered a new leadership role, Complex Manager, overseeing multiple offices. His vision and people-first approach made him a respected leader in the financial industry.

He later served as President of the Port of Los Angeles, where he led with innovation and vision, helping to modernize one of the world's busiest ports and strengthen its global competitiveness.

Most notably, Ira co-founded and served as CEO of We the People, where he helped give birth to an entirely new industry: affordable, accessible legal document services. Under his leadership, the company directly served hundreds of thousands of consumers and small businesses, paving the way for an industry that now provides millions of people "another key into the courthouse."

A graduate of Northern Illinois University, Ira remained a lifelong learner and mentor. He was also an active member of Desert Outreach Synagogue, where his faith, wisdom, and generosity enriched the community.

Outside his professional life, Ira found joy in horseback riding and tennis.

I was reading a news article about displaced residents due to the horrible fires in Altadena. I was recalling past visits to California and suddenly, I thought of Ira and wondered about him...I googled his name and added "California" to the search bar and was shocked to see a post of his recent passing.

In 1978, I graduated from the University of Miami. I delayed my move to New York due as a result of opening a small hair salon business in downtown Miami. One of my first clients was Ira. He was working at Smith Barney then and did his best to recommend everyone at the firm to help my business grow. It worked! The business was doing quite well when Ira announced during a haircut, that the prestigious office building where his office was located was developing a small "underground" retail level and satellite post office. He insisted I immediately make an appointment with the leasing manager, (which he had arranged) to explore the possibility of securing a lease/space as he too was opening a small sundry shop as an investment. He suggested this would be excellent opportunity the take my business to the next level. I was young, nervous about moving a newly successful business, yet took his advice and ended up building a very profitable, more luxurious salon/spa that would last for over 25 years!

I had many other business ventures throughout my lifetime, most related to real estate. And ALL of it was due to the funding from the salon.

I owe so much to this man´s prescient advice. He was never and will never be forgotten for his kindness and graciousness.

Uncle Ira was the man I looked up to most in my life, and I wish I had told him that. He was incredibly smart, funny, and had the kind of relationship with my Aunt Linda that I always hoped to find for myself one day.

My brother Jason and I visited them often, and every time we did, they made us feel like part of the family in every possible way. I loved riding and caring for their horses. It was through those visits I learned how much work goes into caring for horses-and realized owning one might not be in my future after all!

I have so many wonderful memories. I remember them taking us to Disneyland and how amazing it felt to be included. I loved spending time with my cousins and being part of those special moments.

One of my favorite traditions was the annual family photo in matching outfits. Jason and I were always included-matching clothes and all. Uncle Ira also had this fun little tradition where he´d tell us it was our birthday-even when it wasn´t. Then he and Aunt Linda would take us shopping and let us choose one thing, anything we wanted. One year, I got a new TV. Another year, I picked out a giant stuffed horse.

He loved playing games with us too-like "How much money is in my wallet?" If we guessed correctly, we got to keep it. (Spoiler alert: no one ever got it right!)

I thought about Aunt Linda and Uncle Ira all the time. I loved visiting them, and I deeply admired the life they built together and the love they shared.

He was my roommate at NIU for the 2nd semester of "63 - '64 in Gilbert Hall, the least desirable dorm on campus. We always enjoyed seeing Ira's shirts (he only wore dress shirts) delivered from the cleaners having been washed, ironed and starched. Recall hearing him give the stock reports on Chicago radio. Goodbye friend!
