Guest Book
Born in Grants Pass, Oregon, second son to Carl Raymond Smith and Silva Duncan Smith, he grew up there and in Kalispell, Montana and later, Wenatchee, Washington.
He served on the USS New Jersey in the Pacific as a member of the US Navy during WWII.
Following the war, he settled in Spokane, Washington and worked for the Great Northern Railroad before marrying Joan Patricia DuSault on August 31, 1951. He completed studies at Gonzaga University and then graduated in 1959 from Northwestern School of Law in Portland, OR.
He began his legal career working in the Portland City Attorney's office and then spent several years in private practice in Portland, Pendleton and Burns, Oregon. He was elected as the District Attorney of Harney County in 1978. After leaving office in 1987, he enjoyed a very active retirement, even visiting all 50 US states via motorcycle. He eventually divided his time between Portland and Tucson where he and his longtime partner, Joyce Wolfe, spent their winters.
He is survived by Joyce Wolfe, his children; Andrew Smith of Mill Valley, CA, Tony Smith of Portland, OR, Stacy Smith of Boston, MA, Ted Smith of Portland, OR, and his “adopted” daughters: Monica, Melanie, Molly, and Judith.
