Irwan Sanusi Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Mar. 28 to Mar. 29, 2008.
Irwan Daniel Sanusi M.D., 77, passed away Monday, March 17, 2008, as a result of an accidental fall experienced while playing tennis - his favorite hobby.

He was born February 9, 1931, in to the late Samsi Wibowo (Sie Wie Bo) and late Sarlotti Winarko.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Marina T. Sanusi M.D. of Charlottesville, Virginia; his son, H. David Sanusi M.D. and his wife, Lisa, and their four children, Jeremy, Matthew, Joseph, and Anna, of Atlanta Georgia; his son, H. August Sanusi M.D. and his wife, Martha and their four children, Marina, Olivia, Juliette, and Eliza, of Charlottesville, Virginia; and his daughter, Monica Gelé and her husband, Stephen, and their two children, Julia and Emma, of New Orleans, Louisiana.

Born in Blitar, Indonesia, as Sie Ing Hok, his name changed at the urging of the Indonesian government. He met his future wife, Marina, in high school after which they enrolled together in Airlangga School of Medicine, in Surubaya.

After medical school, he became a resident, then a faculty member in forensic pathology at Airlangga for ten years. During that time, he also received two years of further residency training at the Medical College of Virginia.

Immigrating to America with his family in 1970, he completed further residency training at LSU Medical School in Shreveport, Louisiana then joined the faculty in the Department of Pathology. He was board certified in Forensic and Dermatopathology, becoming one of the leading experts in the area in the field of skin pathology.

As Professor, he co-authored a book on skin pathology, wrote numerous medical articles, and was often an invited lecturer in America and abroad. He was granted Emeritus Professor faculty status at LSU after 34 years of service in the Department of Pathology.

He retired from medicine entirely in 2006 after 46 years of service and then moved to Charlottesville, Virginia. Here he enjoyed his retirement years by playing tennis, spending time with his family, and writing his just published memoirs: Life Story of a Foreign Medical Pathologist. He will be forever remembered for his devotion to his family as a loving husband, father, and "opa"; his unique sense of humor; his fierce passion for tennis; and his world famous "Tattoo Lecture" which he gave to hundreds of LSU medical students over the years.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2008, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home in Charlottesville, Virginia.

A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2008, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Charlottesville, Virginia. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens.

What a wonderful professor, mentor, and human being. I am greatly saddened to learn of his passing. The skills I use daily in my medical practice are in part, directly attributable to the genuinely exceptional interest and effort Dr. Sanusi placed on the teaching of students. I and many will miss him.

Dr. Sanusi was a great teacher. He was very devoted to resident skin pathology teaching. And he was very friendly and humorous. I was a former resident in LSUHSC-Shreveport. I just heard the sad news from a faculty member yesterday. I was very shocked. Dr. Sanusi will always be in my memory.

Sad to hear of his untimely death but fortunate to have enjoyed his major contributions to Pathology and Dermatology at LSUHSC-S.

Dan Sanusi: What a fine husband, father, teacher and Friend. He was always consistently approachable and teaching and sought out humor whenever he could. IF the situation demanded seriousness, he'd comply. But, he loved teaching and laughing and smiling and his Marina and August and David and Monica and Friends.
On his shoulders many many many doctors ride . . . He is a Giant among Few.
I'll miss you and you'll miss my famous Gyn shot in pool we played at Confederate Memorial Medical Center on 9th Floor in 1979. You laughed and laughed and laughed.
