Isadore Newman Obituary
Funeral services will be held Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapel on Fri. Oct. 5, at 10:45 A.M. Burial will follow at Lakeside Memorial Park at 10301 NW 25th St., Doral, 33172. Shiva will follow the burial service at 3:30 at the Cricket Club (1800 NE 114th St. Miami 33181) and in their apartment (2302) on Sunday and Monday at 4:00.
Isadore (Izzy) was born in New York City to Sidney and Betty Newman on Dec. 3, 1942. He married Carole (Spitzer) Newman on July 2, 1966 after falling in love at Miami Beach High School. He completed his Ph.D. at SIU and took a faculty position at The University of Akron where he became a Distinguish Professor and retired after 35 years. He then took a position at Florida International University as a Visiting Scholar. He loved the work he did with the hundreds of students that he mentored on their doctoral journeys and the scholarly work he produced with wonderful colleagues and friends. Over the course of his career he received numerous honors for his achievements and contributions to the field of research methodology and he was inducted into the Miami Beach High School Hall of Fame for his lifetime contributions.
He is survived by Carole, his wife of 52 years, and his wonderful and loving sons David and Matthew, who will miss him dearly. The outpouring of love from family and friends speaks to the lasting impact he has had on those who knew him. He described himself as a statistical therapist, humorist with 1000 jokes (some of which were funny) and a thinking man's boxer (in his younger years). He was an intellect with a very kind heart and a good spirit.
The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to his excellent caregivers and to his hospice provider.

Had the honor to be two offices away from his. He was very kind, accepting and supportive. He offered me to review a book related to my filed to be published in the journal that he was its editor....I thought that was very kind from him being the distinguished professor to me who just joined the college about a year or so then....

To the family of Dr Isadore Newman.
I was a student of Isadore - all the way from Scotland - and have never forgotten what a great teacher he was. So much so I still have the book 'Conceptual Statistics for Beginners' in case I would need it. As it happens, my daughter (21) is now doing statistics as she trains to be a physician - and I immediately thought of the book. Carole, I remember you as well.
I was sad to hear that this great teacher had passed away. God bless you all.

Dear Carole, David, and family,
I am so saddened to learn of your loss. While I only knew Isadore through our interactions at AERA and in the Mixed Methods SIG, I so appreciated his passion for scholarship, his love of debate, and his enduring humor. It's amazing to think of the number of scholars that he mentored and the number of assumptions that he called into question. Mixed methods and AERA will never be the same again.

Carole, David, and Matthew--I'm so sorry for your loss. I met Izzy when I first started my academic career, while attending MWERA and AERA professional meetings. He immediately made me feel comfortable and welcome, and showed genuine interest in my research and career. Izzy was "larger than life," everyone knew him and loved him, and he made these meetings so stimulating and enjoyable. His body of research will endure, as will the journal he founded. We will all miss him, terribly, however. My best wishes for each of you in this difficult time.
