To Tom's family, he was my godfather. My father and Tom went to medical school together. I believe that they were together in Florida as well. I did not realize he passed away several years ago. I had a moment of memory and decided to research his whereabouts. The research led me to this site. He was good to me when I was a little girl. I think I must have been the token child while our dad's were in school. He was a good man!

I wanted to express my deep sympathies to the family of Dr. Thomas Hulvey. I will alway remember his tremendous support to the community of Abingdon with the fondest of memories. As a former student of Abingdon High, I'll never forget the time and support that he provided to the athletic department during my days in school. His expertise at our sporting events provided a tremendous amount of comfort and aid that made us feel we were always in great hands. I have always had great memories during these days and Dr. Hulvey added to this experience for us all. Thank you and God bless.

To the Hulvey family,
Having just returned from vacation, I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Tom's passing.
I had the privilege of working with Tom on the Va Board of Medicine. A more caring, happy, kind person and so humble in light of his credentials and stature would be hard to find. He will be greatly missed by all of us serving on the Board of Medicine.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Tom was so very proud of each of you and spoke of you all often.
May God Bless you,
Suzanne M. Everhart, D.O.

Hulvey Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. Hulvey was a very nice and caring man and orthopedic doctor. I had the opportunity to work for him at Abingdon Orthopedics for a few months in 1991. I remember Dr. Hulvey being very nice to me while I worked there as a medical transcriptionist. I will keep the family in my prayers.

To the Hulvey Family,
I was indeed sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Hulvey. I first met him while he was still in the Charlottsville area and working at the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center. He intimidated me then. I later worked with him as the Physical Therapist with Children's Specialty Services. We met in numerous clinics in several Health Departments. It was good to work with him and see him care for so many childern. He will be missed.
You are in my thoughts and prayers.

To all who loved Dr. Tom Hulvey,
I wish to convey my deepest sympathies on losing such a fine man. I first came to know Dr. Tom some thirty-five years ago. I had polio in 1960 at age four and was in leg braces up to each hip. Dr. Hulvey won my heart right away, by showing me such tender mercies. He operated numerous times and each surgery helped me towards independence. In 1984, I was diagnosed with MS and he cried with me as I told him. Our dr.-patient relationship lasted until his retirement. My family and I were priveledged to know him professionally and as the man who once owned land for his horses on the land in Glade adjoining our land. You're in our prayers. We have been blessed to have known and loved him.

Mrs.Hulvey and Family,
I first met Dr.Hulvey in the late 70s, he performed eight surgeries on me over the years. One thing I learned was you had to stand right in there with him,he just was the type of person who told you how it was. I looked up to him for that, and I'm sure alot more did as well. He was a great doctor and I am going to really miss him. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and all who loved him.
God Bless,

Dear Mrs. Hulvey and family: The staff of Children's Specialty Services wish to extend our deepest sympathy for the loss of a true champion for children with special health care needs. In addition to his many years of dedicated service in staffing our Orthopedic Clinic, Dr. Hulvey also donated thousands of hours of surgical time for which most are not even aware. Over the years, his efforts enabled special needs children to receive care that otherwise was not available within this region. Dr. Hulvey was a strong advocate of pediatric orthopedics. He was instrumental in establishing the Pediatric Orthopedic Field Clinics that we now have being staffed by the University of Virginia. Dr. Hulvey understood the need for family-centered, community based services and always supported our efforts to provide such. Through the years, he improved the quality of life for so many special needs children. It has been an honor and a priviledge to work with Dr. Hulvey. We will miss his teasing, but more important, we will miss his support.

Dear Mrs. Hulvey and Family,
I first came to know your husband and father at the age of 4, when he fitted me for braces because of a problem with my hip. Over the years, because of that problem, I had many follow-ups with Dr. Hulvey and he quickly became one of my favorite people. Then many years later as a recent high school graduate I was forced to revisit him due to an injury to my knee. At my last appointment with him, it was then, as an adult that I truly realized what a wonderful man he was. The compassion and concern that he had for his patients was incomprehensible, but that was his personality. I can remember seeing him at AHS football games and no matter how busy he may have been, he would always stop to say "hi."
Medicine, Abingdon and your family have all lost an amazing man who will be missed by many and forgotten by none. My family and I will keep you in our thoughts and prayers as you grieve. May God always comfort and bless you.

Mrs. Hulvey and family:
When I first met Dr. Hulvey, I thought he was one of the most intimidating people I'd ever met. However, he treated our son for a serious fracture of his arm when he was playing 8th grade football. We were so impressed with his genuine caring. He had the announcer at the next home game mention Chris's name and tell about his football injury. That meant so much to him.
A few years ago he put a shot of cortisone in the palm of my hand. I'll never forget him telling me that I'd hate him when I left there that day.
It's so sad, as we get older, to experience the deaths of such fine people. I'm sure you all have many good memories to help you. My prayers are with you.

Mrs Hulvey and family,
About 29 years ago, my father was in a terrible mining accident. Our family was told he may not survive and certainly would never walk again. Not only did he survive, but he was able to walk with only a small limp. I was 4 years old at the time and I have always known that I had Dr. Hulvey to thank for that.

Dear Mrs. Hulvey and family,
Dr. Hulvey was the best surgeon I have ever known. I had a bad injury to my arm and had had surgery to repair it. It was terrible. My friend was a nurse at Abingdon and she talked me into seeing Dr. Hulvey. He took one look at my arm and said "I didn't do that did I?" He did corrective surgery and my wrist lasted another 20 years. I am so sorry for your loss. He was a wonderful man. Judy Gross

Dear Mrs. Hulvey and family,
I worked with Dr. Hulvey at JMH on the orthopedic floor for several years. As a young graduate many years ago, I was scared to death of him. I think he sensed this and would always get me to make afternoon rounds with him. One day as I was dutifully following him from room to room, he stopped abruptly in the hall and turned around and looked at me, and without ever cracking a smile, told me one of the funniest jokes. From that day forward I dearly loved the man. He was without a doubt one of the best surgeons I've ever known and just a wonderful person. My heart goes out to you, and I pray that God will comfort you. I feel honored to have known him and he will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched. Darlene Dixon Smith RN

I meet Dr. Hulvey in 1989 when my son broke his arm. My son was 6 yrs old when Doc fixed his arm. He broke his other arm in 90 and Doc fixed it. He was my doctor in 91 when I was hurt. We, like many, thought he was the best and will be missed by 1000's. Our thoughts are with the family. GOD BLESS

Dear Betsy, Elizabeth, Margaret, and John,
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of a fine person and a person who was a strong supporter of Abingdon High School. I especially remember those early days after the new football stadium was built and how faithful he was to always be there for the games and to help the school in every way he could.
My thoughts and prayers are with your family during this time of loss. May God's love surround you and give you comfort and peace.
Sincerely,

Dear Mrs. Hulvey and family,
I have so many memories of Dr. Hulvey. My first is as his patient in the childrens clinic so many years ago.It is because of he and Ed Hill's "gruffness" that my orthopedic problem has been easier in adulthood.
Years later I became a nurse and had the privelege to work with him in the OR,ER,and PACU. My respect for him as a physician and a man of integrity and caring is immeasurable. We have missed him so much since his retirement. I'm glad I had the opportunity to visit with him during his last admission. My thoughts are with you.

Dear Betsy, Elizabeth, Margaret and John:
I have such great admiration for Dr. Hulvey and the way he dedicated his service to our community and beyond. I was honored to live upstairs in his mother's home in Abingdon many years ago. Dr. Hulvey had always been a formidable presence in this town, but seeing him as a devoted son and generous "landlord" helped me understand the gentle man behind the professional image. He will be truly missed by many, yet we cannot begin to know your loss. I will continue to lift all of you up in prayer; may you find peace and strength through God's grace.

Mrs. Hulvey and family,
I work at the orthopedics office and I'm the one who gave Dr. Hulvey a monthly call to come visit us. You'll never know what a joy Dr. Hulvey was to me. I started work there in 1999 and he always went out of his way to speak and "pick" on me. I cherished it. He gave me support during hard times in my life and was just a joy to know. I missed him when he retired from the office and just can't believe I won't see that wonderful face again. I feel fortunate that I did get to see him momentarily last week and just want you to know of my deepest sympathies. If I can be of any assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know. My prayers are with you.

My relationship with the Hulvey family has been relatively short in time but long in memories. Tom meant so much to me when I was raising funds for UVA. He had the ability to convey a message that made one want to work harder to reach goals, all with a sense of reality for the situation. I will miss his discussions of the Episcopal church which he charished. I will miss his offer for a glass of scotch. Most of all, I will miss one of the most genuine people I have ever known. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Betsy and Elizabeth, who I feel like I know well, and the rest of the family that Tom spoke of so often. God bless you all. Tom Payne
