This man taught me more about the stars and night sky than anyone, and I enjoyed learning from him. Jack seemed to bring us along with him on his nebular journeys. Not as students or audience, but as friends. I miss him terribly, but my loss is God's gain. And someday I'll get to meet him in His presence.

He inspired me to take up star gazing when I was a teen. Now that I am much older and getting interested in astronomy again, I find that he is no longer with us. I loved his shows and I am going to greatly miss him.

I always enjoyed Mr. Horkheimer on PBS. I'll always see him walking on the rings of Saturn. He was even more than I imagined....from what little I knew of him before reading this. Hope to meet him in another life....It would be a great honor.

I cannot believe it is Nov. 4, 2011 and I just found out that Jack died. I must live under a rock in IL. I assumed he retired when I found someone else on the show. I am so sad to read this, I loved his weekly shows!

Hey Pal:
I enjoyed those dinner parties with you at Toonie's house. You were so sassy. Hope you're having a good time flying through the cosmos now that you're no longer limited by the constraints of your physical body. I'd welcome a visit if you ever want to come by and say "Hi!".
See you when I get there! Save a star for me!
Love,
Donna

Oh man! This breaks my heart. I used to watch him growing up, at around 4 in the morning, summers, before my paper route. I hadn't checked in for about a year and I saw episode after episode with the guest host. I miss Jack - nobody can replace him. Thanks for filling those nights with the cosmos, Jack.

Jack Horkheimer is the reason I still get up ridiculously early or stay up crazy late to watch meteor showers and am excited by other celestial happenings, and it's obvious from this guest book that I'm only one of an enormous number of people who can say the same. Hopefully I can impart some of that love of the sky to my own infant son as he grows up. Thank you, Jack.

Im all grown up now but I still love that funny star man and am so greatful for his unique inspiration. I cant say enough. He was such a special part of my childhood.,so Jack, wherever you are...thanks to you I`ll keep lookin up.

I'd been wondering why Jack's show was having guest hosts. Tonight, when the guest host said he was to host the show for the month, I couldn't stand it any longer. I had to know. Was Jack on an extended leave of absence to work on some other show or was something more serious happening.
So I went to the internet and sadly found his obituary. I am so very sorry to hear he lost his battle. I always looked forward to his star gazer show and his theme music from Isao Tomida's albumn, "Snowflakes Are Dancing" always brought a smile to my face. He wore shoes that can never fully be filled. He will be sorely missed.

I loved that show - his persona was no small part of that. He made learning about the stars fun, and playful in a way that even I could appreciate and I am no youngling. I will miss him, and remember him with great fondness.

If Jack was never taken seriously by professional astronomers, that is their problem. It was Jack that taught me about the 3 stars in the Belt of Orion-- their names, what language those names were, the translations of those names and their distances in light-years from Earth. He taught me how to see colors in stars by looking back and forth rapidly between Sirius and Aldeberon. Also, visualizing 3-D when looking at stars. He inspired me to study Stellar Astronomy. Thank you, Mr. Horkheimer!!

I remember watching Star Hustler when I was just a kid. If it was not for you Mr. Horkheimer I would never have become so interested in science. Thank you very much for all the years of knowledge passed on to us all. You will be forever missed.

I became aquainted with Jack's program the winter of 1997 when Hale-Bopp was gliding by. I've been a passionate fan ever since.
He could always be counted on to explain which planet was bright in the sky on any given day, and in an easy to understand and entertaining way.
Rest well, dear Jack, and as you said in your own epitaph "keep looking up".

Jack Horkheimer was a sweet man. It seemed as if he never aged, from the time my grandmother (now passed for 18 years!) used to faithfully watch him, and myself following along.
His presence will truly be missed on earth!
Meanwhile, we will 'keep looking up' on your behalf, Jack. :)

Strangest thing: years ago my wife and I used to make it a point to watch Jack's program on PBS and then watch for the features he spoke of. I hadn't thought of that until Wednesday 8/25 when I was websurfing and went to Stargazer site. He spoke to me. I'll miss him and fear no one will continue his style of reporting.

Rest In Peace, Jack Horkheimer. You will be missed by many.

Jack Horkheimer was a unique and wonderful man who awakened my love of astronomy as a young person. It was his influence and his outstanding PBS show that eventually drew me to study astronomy and science in college. It has been difficult for me to not cry today, having just learned of his passing this morning. The world has lost a beautiful, funny, intelligent man who had such an incredible love for the Cosmos. Thank you, Jack, for sharing your gift with the world. We'll keep looking up, and I know up there one of those twinkling lights in the night sky is the twinkle in your eye as you look back down at us. RIP, Star Hustler Extraordinaire...

What a great guy! So passionate in his beliefs and presentation, and he made stargazing fun and exciting. When I heard the music on his PBS show, I always stopped what I was doing to watch and enjoy. Sympathy to all family & friends, but thanks to the miraculous series of events that delivered him to this small planet in the vast cosmos.
