Upon returning, Jack studied at the University of Utah, earning a Bachelor's degree and a Masters Degree of Business Administration in 1962. Later, in 2005, the University of Utah honored Jack as a Distinguished Alumnus of the David Eccles School of Business. Jack married Ellen Marie Barlow in the Salt Lake Temple on August 10, 1959. Jack served in the United States Army achieving the rank of Captain before his honorable discharge. Jack and Marie moved to Phoenix, Arizona to raise their five children: Greg (Lisa), Allison (Mike) Gleave, Holly Lake Beus, Sean (Amy), and Jennifer (Dan) Jolley. In 1991 Jack served a second mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as the President of the Canada Calgary Mission until 1994, where he and Marie embraced and served with hundreds of young men and women. Sister Lake,
My heart is full as I consider the legacy that was clearly left upon my heart and soul by the efforts of you and your wonderful husband. As I continue to serve in the church, I can feel his imprint on my teaching, upon my leadership skills and on all that I do. He is one of just a few I truly consider to be a mentor in my life. It is never easy to lose those we love. Elder Nelson taught that the only way to take the sadness out of our loss is to take the love out of life. Thank you and your dear husband for your effect upon so many. We love you.

I hardly know what to say through my tears. As a missionary, President Lake encouraged me and loved me and showed me gifts I didn't know I had. He encouraged me to write my first songs. He helped me recognize my worth as a daughter of God. He taught me not to murmur (still working on that). One of my favorite memories is kneeling in prayer together after a personal interview. We was so tall, I jumped up quickly so I could hug him around the neck once before he got up. I'm sure it was terribly inappropriate, but so heartfelt. He took such good care of us all. His love and influence are VERY far reaching. I can't even express them. SO often in my life things have come to mind that he taught in Zone conference, or said in an interview to help me personally. I thank GOD for sending me to Pres. Lake during such a formative and essential part of my life. My mission set the tone for the WHOLE rest of my life, in many ways. Thanks to you and Sister Lake, for two remarkable years in the CCM. I've missed you ever since. Til we meet again, dear man!

As a young missionary I was indelibly marked by a Zone Conference talk on two words President Lake told us he lives by: Integrity, and Tenacity. I can think of no better way to honor his legacy than to say these are still the words that guide my life to this day. my most sincere condolences Sister Lake.

Dear Marie and Family,

We extend our deepest sympathy at the loss of President Lake. Kay Lynn and I are so grateful for our association when President and Sister Lake presided over the Canada Calgary Mission. I was the Infield Representative in the Missionary Department in Salt Lake City and had the great opportunity of sharing many spiritual experiences with both President Lake and Sister Lake as they worked with the missionaries. We shared tears and also laughter.

We are recipients of his kindness and generosity and are so grateful for having had this fine association over the years.

Marie, we remember with fondness the evening that we spent with you and President Lake when we were visiting Phoenix. The food was wonderful, but the company was even more wonderful.

Please know how much we loved Jack Lake! He will be missed by oh so many!

I grew up with Scott in Salt Lake and always remember the admiration Scott had for his brother. The few times I met him were memorable occasions. When I had the opportunity to spend time with Jack in the Scouting program in Phoenix I was again impressed by his dedication to youth and his ability to get things done. I know he will be missed by many, but his memory will linger for his many good works.

Dear Marie, We regret the passing of your dear companion. He was a very special Mission President (with you by his side) and friend to me while serving in the Canada Calgary Mission. I was President of the Calgary Alberta West Stake and I greatly admired his dedication to regularly attend our Missionary Correlation meetings. As you may remember, we enjoyed getting together in our acreage home as he shared the challenges and joys of Missionary service. He was a very impressive Mission President with great wisdom and a powerful spirit. Our memory of him will never fade.
May the Lord be with you Marie.
Most sincerely,

Dear Marie,
I was saddened to see that your dear Jack had died. My memories of Jack go back to childhood. His parents Jack and Virginia were neighbors and in-laws of my Uncle Heber Kimball. I spent of lot of time at Uncle Heber’s and thought the Lakes were great people. I remember you both at the U and then our lives took different paths, as we moved to New York to raise our family when you moved to Arizona. I was thrilled to see what a wonderful blessing the two of you have been to the saints in Phoenix. What a wonderful legacy of service you and Jack have left. How proud the Lake family must be of all of you. Our love and sympathy to you and your family.

"Elder Lake" was a missionary in South Australia when I was 12 years old and came to our door in answer to my prayers. I went on to serve a mission, emigrate to the USA, marry in the temple, go to BYU and get a couple of degrees, travel and see more of the world, appear in a national TV series and on ... all because this man was a good missionary. I have never forgotten him and the influence he had on my young life. So I extend both my thanks and condolences to his family and hope that my good memories may be added to theirs.

I send my sympathy to Marie and the family for their great loss. Jack was a giant among men in the Church, Business, Community, family and among friends. His accomplishment were great and his conunsel and advise wise. He will be missed by all of us who knew him well. I greatly enjoyed his teaching of the Gospel Doctrine Class and his speaking in Curch meetings He had a good knowledge of the Scriptures and a fine sense of humor.
I send my love and desire to be of any help possible.

I was saddened to hear about the passing of our dear President Lake. I was one of the missionaries who had the great privelage of serving with him from 92-94. President Lake had a unique ability to form close, personal relationship with nearly every missionary he presided over. I'll never forget the uplifting feeling I had when I was in his presence. He was like a father figure to me and always had the right things to say as if he knew me more than I knew myself. He may have left the earth, but his presence will forever be apart of who I am. Love ya president. Thanks for everything.

Dear Marie and Family:
We Send our Deep Love and Sympathy At Jack's Passing. He Was truly an Incredible Man and Touched So Many Lives for Good. I Was priviledged to Know Jack "Salty" at USU in the Sigma Chi Fraternity and He Was a Great Friend and A True Brother in Every sense of the Word. My Wife, Rhonda was Blessed to Serve with Jack's Mom , Virginia, for Many Years with The Festival of Tees and when Sean married sweet Amy our ties with the Lake Family were closer. A couple of years ago, My son in law and I went to Arizona to Watch and enjoy the "Cactus League" pre season Baseball games for a week. While we were there I called Amy and she put me in touch with Jack. Always the Gracious, Kind and Generous Host, Jack insisted that we come over to Mesa and Play Golf at the Beautiful Arizona Golf resort, which we greatfully did..We had a Super Time and a Wonderful meeting with Jack even though he was in the middle of some very important meetings at the Resort. When we asked about paying for 18 Holes of golf, Practice Balls and the Cart, Jack just laughed and said.."It's Taken Car Of"..i said "Jack You Can't Do That" and He answered, OH Yes I Can.. I Own the Place.. He Won that Argument.. Words can not in any way express our Love for You and The Lake Family..We Plan to be at the Graveside Services on Feb 27th in SLC and Look Forward to Being with all of You. May Our Father in Heaven Bless and Comfort You and Help You Keep Jack's sweet Spirit Always Close to Your Hearts.
Love,
Harry and Rhonda Gephart
