Jack Lieber Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 25 to Jan. 27, 2010.
SAN ANGELO Jack Lieber passed away Saturday Jan. 23, at home as he wished, after a lengthy illness. He was surrounded by dear life long friends and family. Family visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, at Johnson's Funeral Home. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, in Fairmount Cemetery with Rev. Bill Proctor officiating. Jack was born in San Angelo, Texas to Frank and Grace Lieber on Feb. 19, 1926. He graduated from San Angelo High School in 1943, where he was the high school band drum major. He joined the Army Air Corps after graduation and served with the occupation forces in Germany. He was discharged in 1946, and returned to San Angelo to attend and graduate from San Angelo Jr. College. He began working for his father in the painting business. On Nov. 6, 1947, he married Betty Pinkerton at the First Presbyterian Church with Dr BO Wood officiating. Jack branched off from his father's company and started his company, Jack Lieber Painting & Decorating in 1953. Upon his retirement in 2000, the business became Lieber Painting Inc with his son-in-law and daughter at the helm. In 1951, he became interested in officiating football and moved from the junior high to high school games, then the Lone Star Conference football games. He had the privilege of working several state high school championship games. Jack became the chairman of assignments for officials of the Lone Star Conference. He met many officials and coaches from across the state. Along the way, he found a love for track and field and worked many years at the San Angelo relays and Bluebonnet relays. He joined ITOAT, a national track and field organization. He worked at the National Division II track meet and began working the state final track meet in Austin in 1973. He never missed a state meet? never? ever! Jack was an avid ASU fan and looked forward to all the football and basketball games where he enjoyed visiting with his friends. Jack loved golf and spent many hours enjoying his golfing buddies on the course and in the 19th hole at SACC. Every June, he looked forward to the club partnership until he was unable to play. Jack and Betty loved to dance and spent many evenings on the dance floor. And as mother always said "he danced in the center of the floor and under the mirror ball." Jack was a Deacon for many years at the First Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Suez Temple and Masonic Lodge 1260. Jack is survived by his wife, Betty; his son, Frank "Rusty" Lieber and wife Jo; his daughter, Beth Ann Bucholz and husband Don. "Daddy Jack's" grandchildren are Stefanie Taylor and husband Clayton of Sonora, Amber Smith and husband Wesley, Capt Doug Bucholz of Little Rock, Ark. and Capt Matthew Bucholz and wife Stephanie of Clearfield, Utah. He also had 2 great- grandsons, Dylan and Lane Taylor and a great-granddaughter, Daisy Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Kathleen Brasfield, Al Putska, Howard Himmel, Sonny Cleere, O.L. Schuch, Bill Purser, Red Aiken, Randy Minton and Richard Mayer. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of San Angelo, Meals for the Elderly or the Angelo State Athletic Dept.

Ms. Lieber, my sincere condolences on the passing of Mr. Lieber. I helped to take care of getting your prescriptions for you at Myer's Drug before I left there. Jack was a joy to know. He was one the original officials to take myself and a few others under his wing when we started to officiate football. He made an impression and new friend w/my oldest son at the state 6-man championship games we had here a couple years ago. Jack had us both in the press box with him. Jack took great pleasure in sugaring my son up on Cokes and Snicker bars. I don't know who had more fun Jack or my son.
Jack will be greatly missed. I loved listening to all of his stories.
