Jaime Virata Mangubat, M.D., 84, of Waynesboro, Tenn, passed away Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012.
Dr. Mangubat was born April 13, 1927, in Manila, Philippines, to Tomas and Matilde Mangubat.
Dr. Mangubat dedicated his life to caring for the people of Wayne County, giving selflessly of his time, energy and skill to countless patients and their families. Dr. Mangubat practiced in Waynesboro for 45 years, delivering more than 600 babies and successfully performing thousands of surgeries at Wayne County General Hospital, Lewis County Hospital and Perry County Memorial Hospital.
He was a founding member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, held memberships in the Lions Club, Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow in the Rotary Club.
In 1996, the street to Wayne County General Hospital was named J.V. Mangubat Drive in his honor. In 2007, the Tennessee Legislature honored him by proclaiming April 13 as Dr. J.V. Mangubat Day.
Dr. Mangubat retired from practice at the age of 83.
Dr. Mangubat received his medical degree from the University of Santo Thomas Medical School in 1952, completed an internship at Deaconess Hospital, St. Louis, general practice residency at Suburban Hospital, Bethesda, and his surgical residency at Nashville General Hospital and St. Thomas Hospital, Nashville, Tenn., serving as chief resident of surgery his final year. Returning to the Philippines with his family in 1959, he practiced there for four years as a surgeon. In 1963, he returned to the U.S. with his family, serving as the medical director, Grafton State Hospital, Grafton, Mass., until 1967, when he and his family moved to Waynesboro, Tenn., where he was the sole physician in the county and the only surgeon in a tri-county area for over a decade.
Dr. Mangubat is preceded in death by his parents, (Tomas and Matilde Mangubat); a brother and three sisters (Tomas Mangubat, Belen Mangubat, Corazon Mangubat and Edith Mangubat).
He is survived by his wife, Ann Mangubat; and four children, Jaime (Jim) Mangubat (Babs), Karen Mangubat Serafini (Dan), Enrico (Rick) Mangubat and Diane Mangubat LeBlanc (Allen); seven grandchildren, James Chadwick (Chad) Moore, William Matthew (Matt) Todd, Moulton LeBlanc, Candis LeBlanc, Ashlyn Staggs, Austin McDonald and Luke Mangubat; two great-grandchildren, Jonah Moore and Jaime Moore; and two sisters, Nellie Mangubat and Lilly Mangubat.
Funeral services will be at the Shackleford Funeral Home in Waynesboro, Tenn., with visitation from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb 12 and services at 1 p.m., Monday, Feb 13. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens, Waynesboro, Tenn., with Shackelford Funeral Directors, Wayne County, directing.
