James Bowie Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 6, 2023.
James Philip Bowie, a beloved husband, father, son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend, passed away on May 26, 2023, at the age of 56. Philip was born on August 13, 1966, the younger of two boys, to parents Gordon Scott Bowie and Elizabeth Helen Bowie, formerly of Clydebank, Scotland. After graduating from the University of Texas at El Paso with a degree in business, Philip was hired into the Leadership Development Program at SBC, which eventually became AT&T. He was very invested in his work and in the people he worked with. Philip was so proud to have recently celebrated 26 years with AT&T as an Assistant Vice President for Global Public Policy.

Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, he cultivated a network of deep friendships which he kept close to his heart his entire life. He was a modern Renaissance man, with knowledge and skill in anything and everything that interested him. If he didn't know it, he learned it. He loved cycling, skiing, woodworking, music, gardening, traveling, spending time with his family (including his dog, Lola) and sitting in his front yard watching the world go by. He saw the world through his own unique lens, which gave him a big, unique personality: he was humble, empathetic, caring, charismatic, kind, exacting, smart and oh so funny. He was a devoted husband and dad to his beloved wife and son. We had his whole heart; we had the best. He is, and will always be, so very missed.

Philip is survived by his wife Suzanna and son, Marshall; his mother, Helen; brother Mark and sister-in-law, Koren; nephew Jackson (and wife Allison) and niece Elizabeth (and partner Graham); sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, as well as many nephews and nieces through marriage.

A memorial service will be held in Falls Church, Virginia, on Saturday, 6/17 at 2:00pm, immediately followed by a reception in the fellowship hall at Falls Church Presbyterian Church, 225 E. Broad St, Falls Church, VA 22046.

A second memorial service will be held in El Paso, Texas on Saturday, 6/24 at 2:00pm, immediately followed by a reception in the fellowship hall at University Presbyterian Church, 244 Resler Drive, El Paso, Texas 79912.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that a donation be made to a charity of your choice.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. He was such a great man. I knew the boy growing up and full of energy and always wanting to be seen. Much love and prayers.

Philip and i worked together at SBC/AT&T for several years. I loved working with Philip and appreciated our time together. His willingness to see things from other perspectives allowed us to do some great things at work. But more importantly, getting to be friends with Philip was way more important than anything we did at work. Philip always had the right moral compass and was a natural at work. He was well respected across the many different departments with whom he interacted. On top of that, we always tried to mix a little bit of fun into some very stressful times and loved to hear him laugh. He will certainly be missed. I offer condolences and a prayers for peace during this difficult time and wish the best for Suzanna and Marshall and family. The AT&T family already misses Philip.

I knew Mr. Philip for only a short time. Even with just this glimpse into his life, I saw the kind soul he had. His generosity, kindness, silliness, and uniqueness was evident. The Bowie family took me on trips and with them to fun events like the concerts he loved so much. I´ll always cherish those memories and think back fondly on his excitement for music. He´s truly missed, but I am lucky to say that I met him. Marshall, please take care of yourself.

Philip was so real in his goodness, humanity, and gentle yet strong character, that the light he lived can never be extinguished. He has and will continue to inspire us through his wonderful example of how to truly live.

We were blessed to have Philip as our next-door neighbor for well over a decade. His quiet kindnesses (and there were oh-so many), thoughtfulness, and consistent good cheer were daily gifts to both of us. His heart and thoughts were always aligned for good for his family, friends, neighbors, the world. To Suzanna and Marshall and all of Philip's family, please know that for us, every thought of Philip will always be alive with inspiration and gratitude for having known him. We love you all.

I was very sad to learn of Philip´s passing. My son Rowan Edwards contacted me as soon as he learned. I of course knew Philip in El Paso when the boys were having a great time. God bless him and may he rest in peace.

I feel so lucky to have met Philip through my daughter, Emma and Marshall. My husband and I invited the Bowies to dinner on a school and work night. We all clicked and had so much fun none of us wanted the night to end (adulting sucks sometimes). A few months later the Bowies came to Emma´s graduation and graduation party. They won the hearts of so many of our friends so much so that we promised to have a follow up gathering with the Bowies in the future. Philip was so kind and generous every time I had the pleasure of being in his company. My heart aches for Suzanna and Marshall. Philip was an exceptional husband, father and friend and will be missed by all that we´re lucky enough to have met him.

Very hard to believe. This week I have reflected on memories long forgotten. The night of spending the night with Philip and Mark and all those UPC youth trips. Philip was always, always joyful and just loved life. From skiing in Ruidoso to rafting on the Rio Grande. That joy manifested and was evident as he became a husband and father. Wow, I am a better person for knowing Philip. Our prayers are with the family.
