BURGESS, James P., Jr. James P. Burgess, Jr., 89, late resident of Bloomfield for 46 years died Thursday (June 25, 2009) in Camp Hill, PA where he had resided for the last 11 years. He was born March 15, 1920 in Hartford, son of James P. Burgess, Sr. and his wife Myrtle (Hyde) Burgess, and spent his youth in Hartford and West Hartford. He served almost four years in the U.S. Army during World War II, achieving the rank of master sergeant. After the War, he returned to Connecticut and worked in Hartford as the manager of agency accounting for Aetna Fire and Casualty until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of the Masonic Order of Masons at Wyllys Lodge No. 99 and active in the Bloomfield Congregational Church. He was an 11th generation direct descendant of Thomas Burgess ("Thomas the Pilgrim") who arrived in Salem, MA in 1630 and settled in Sandwich, Plymouth Colony in 1637 and a descendant of Joseph Burgess who removed to Connecticut and served as an officer in the American Revolution. His beloved wife Ruth E. (Perry) Burgess predeceased him in 1968 after 26 years of marriage. His 2nd marriage to Evelyn Waller Martin ended in divorce in 1977 without children. He is survived by his daughter, Susan B. Whittier and her spouse Charles Whittier of Newport, PA; his son, James P. Burgess, III and his spouse Jane F. Burgess of Rockville, MD; his granddaughter, Lena Kemble and her spouse Patrick Kemble of Newport, PA; his grandson Scott Whittier and his spouse Carey M. Whittier of Wallingford; his granddaughter, Ruth E. Burgess and her spouse Donald Brown of Oakton, VA; his nine great-grandchildren: Glenn, Eric, and Lauren Kemble, Jared, Aidan, Ashley, and Jillian Whittier, and James and Anthony Brown; and his sisters-in-law, Clara P. Meadows and Lois P. Edwin. Graveside Funeral Service and burial will be Thursday, July 2, 1 p.m. at Mountain View Cemetery, 30 Mountain Avenue, Bloomfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bloomfield Cemetery Association, 30 Mountain Avenue, Bloomfield, CT 06002. Dad, You will be greatly missed by your loving family members and many friends at the Woods and other places and people you touched. We will always celebrate your life
as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, accountant, WWII soldier, trumpeter and quiet friend to many you met along your long live. You now in God's hands. We will see you again.
