James "Burt" Moore Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 16, 2024.
James Burton Moore Jr. or Burt, as he was known, passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on May 10, 2024, in Florida, which he called home for over the past decade. He was born in Michigan and resided on Grosse Ile for most of his life.

Burt attended Michigan State University and the University of Detroit and had an impactful career in automotive manufacturing working for ITM and American Axle, to name a few. He was able to be at the assembly line when the first Chrysler Prowler vehicle rolled off, as well as the first Dodge Viper, while in his managerial roles he had at those times. Burt even helped create a patent in an area of manufacturing during his career.

When he wasn't working, he was an avid boater with sailboat racing as his true passion. Leading his crew on his C&C 30, "Mystique", was probably his best life, if he were to comment. Racing the Port Huron to Mackinaw race was a challenge he loved, even stating how many tacks and jibes it took to complete the race as a general rule! Burt, and all his friends from the Grosse Ile Yacht Club, spent most Wednesday nights after racing eating popcorn, drinking beverages and enjoying their company and stories. In 1978, Burt served as Commodore. Burt was also a member of the Grosse Ile Country Club. On weekends, like clockwork, every Friday was spent with all his friends at each other's houses talking about life, happiness, and overall good times. When sailing was too much for him as he grew older, he turned to power boating which shocked the conscience of those who knew him. He thrived on the water and he was going to be near it at every opportunity.

Burt took his family on many vacations; as well as very long, slow boat rides to Cedar Point, which he enjoyed thoroughly - though his children didn't share his enthusiasm for these 8-hour boat rides at a sluggish 6 knots! When there was snow, Burt and his family spent annual weekends at Boyne Highlands for skiing and good times with friends joining along the way. Burt enjoyed attending youth football games watching Jim play, as well as watching Kim as part of the high school marching band.

Sadly, when Burt's first wife, Barbara Sue Moore, passed away, he moved permanently to Florida into the condo he had purchased many, many years prior. Burt was able to find love again and married his second wife, Jackie. Together, they lived life to the fullest and traveled the world for more than ten years.

Burt lost his fight with many health struggles peacefully, in hospice. He was loved by his surviving children: Kimberly Susan Moore, James Burton Moore III, Burt's two grandsons Braeden Moore and Keegan Moore. Burt was also loved dearly by Jackie, and her children and grandchildren including Claire, Kate and Bob who treated him lovingly. Burt will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
