James "Captain Jim" Berube Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 31, 2024.
James "Captain Jim" Berube was called home by our Good Lord on December 20, 2024 in Naples, FL. He suffered a heart attack. Jim, born February 22, 1963, was the son of Richard and Claire Berube of Bridgton, Maine. Jim was raised in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and attended Sacred Heart Grammar School and Central Catholic High School, later transferring to Lawrence High, where he graduated in 1981.

As a kid, Jim was active. He enjoyed a well-rounded childhood full of experiences including family camping, boy scouts, little league, snow mobiling, delivering newspapers, water & snow skiing.

From a very young age, Jim could be found taking things apart and putting them together again. This led to larger endeavors as he grew, moving to manual go-carts followed by powered engines, then mini bikes, his beloved 1970 Pontiac Formula as a teen, ATVs, and eventually to his boats.

Of his many hobbies, Jim loved boats. He played with motor & speed boats, purchased a sailboat, later a yacht. He spent much time on the ocean entertaining family & friends. His life dream was to become a captain, a goal he attained approximately 10 years ago. Jim became a charter captain, creating his ideal work situation, making his office the helm seats of fortunate multimillion dollar yachts. He lived his dream. He bought a fixer-upper for himself several years ago where he spent many hours with his nephew, Aaron, preparing it for his retirement years. It was only fitting that he passed in the boat, "Chillin" he so loved.

Jim started his working career at his dad's RV and tool rental business, putting his mechanical skills to use. He spent a short time at Showcase Cinema & Bishops Restaurant but soon returned to the rental agency. Later, Jim ran a construction business and did freelance snow plowing. In the 90s, he got a position at Pioneer Basements, and just a few years later bought Basement Systems of NH, which flourished under his leadership. He was loved by his employees and had many satisfied customers.

Jim was a fun spirited man, always the life of the party. He knew no stranger. His outgoing personality drew people to love him. He would add humor to any story, making it impossible for any visit to be dull.

He loved others and could be counted on to step up to opportunities to help out. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his nephews.

He enjoyed parties and gatherings with his cousins in Florida. His move to Florida made the visits to his immediate family less frequent, but it was always exciting when he'd come to town unexpectedly and pop in.

Jim will be deeply missed by all who knew him, especially his parents, Richard & Claire, his very special friend, Judy Marriott of Clearwater, Florida. his sisters, Mary-Jane Rice and brother-in-law Bill of Methuen, Mass, Brenda Terry and brother-in-law Michael of Chester, N.H., nephews Justin (& Erin) Terry, Jeremy (& Kristyn) Terry, Aaron Rice & Daniel (& Kelly) Rice, his 4 great nephews and nieces, and many cousins.

Memorial services will be announced at a further date in the Spring.

So saddened to hear about the passing of Captain Jim and our deepest condolences go out to his family. Jim was the captain of our boat here in St Petersburg. We had many great and safe trips with him at the helm. Rest in peace Captain. Easy winds and trailing seas.

Jim, we never did get out on the Florida waters together. Derek and I regret we never made that happen. My last memory of being with you was at our friends wedding in Italy. We laughed a lot and it was so nice to have you drive me around! When I think of you I will always smile and remember how much joy you brought to those around you. Rest in peace as you captain your vessel on the sparkling ocean in heaven, until we meet again ~Nikki and Derek Kaloust

Dearest Berube Family, I can only imagine how devastated you all are. Especially you Dick and Claire. I´m so sorry for your loss. Jim was awesome, always helpful, always happy, always kind, always friendly, always positive. I look back fondly at my time working with all of you. At Berube RV, and at the Tool Rental. Great memories. I will always cherish those memories and I will always miss Jimbo! Prayers for all of you.

"Uncle" Jim (and for a short time) his bulldog "Big" were regular celebrities at my house. He was very kind to my wife and me and my 3 kids. Everything was like an adventure with him. It's was always great to spend time with him as little as it was over the last few years. Such a positive attitude and a great example of a great human being. We love you Uncle Jim and will miss you. Until we meet again.

We have very fond memories of Jim. We particularly remember the dinner that we had with him and his parents in Naples many years ago, around the time that he became a charter captain.
Jim was a great family man and we will sorely miss him.
We send our condolences to his family and friends at this very difficult time.

Jimmy. There's only one Jimmy. I've known you most of our lives. It was fun, honest, interesting when I would see you growing up or later at Mary -jane house for a family gathering. We loved you, your sense of humor. It won't be forgotten. Forever in our thoughts and prayers. Cousin Anne
