Coach Jim Gabrielsen Gabe, was more than a football coach, he was a friend and my personal hero. As I sit here writing these words, I wonder if I can even do justice to the memory of someone who meant so much to me personally and meant to the hundreds of my peers that he provided positive influence for over the years. I remember my first day of football practice in 1969, I was only 17 years old and was now in a situation where many of the other athletes were in their mid-twenties. Gabe told me that age did not matter, that he saw something in me that would allow me to compete. That advice set me on the right course in life. After my playing days, my friends and I became friends with Gabe and his family, it was a relationship that has endured for a lifetime. I can't even count the ways Gabe influenced me to be a better man, to contribute to society, and not to forget where I came from. I will miss him terribly but I suspect that he will continue to be an inspiration to all of us that remain. Gabe's family remains, and they will be remembered as we all move forward keeping the memories alive and well.
