James Loel Hines

James, 81, had a long and successful Medical Career. He served as a Flight Surgeon and Captain in the Airforce. When he left the Airforce, he went into private practice.

He died March 6, 2020 in Phoenix with his daughter Blake holding his hand and his loving wife nearby.

He was born on March 2, 1939 in Kansas City, MO to Mr. Charles Penn Hines and Mrs. Marye Carter Hines.

He received his BS from University of Oklahoma and his MD from the Louisiana State University. He did research at L.S.U. Department of Surgery, and specialized in Plastic Surgery at University of Arizona.

He performed research and was published for his extensive research in burn wounds and Sepsis. He was licensed to practice medicine in New Orleans LA, Tulsa OK, San Bernardino CA, and Bellingham WA . James retired in 2000. He specialized in plastic and hand surgery along with cleft lip and pallet surgery.

Mr. Hines was a gentleman who was soft spoken to all and gave sound advice. His love for adventure took him across the world where he found friendship in all he met. He revisited his Captain title by spending many of his summers discovering the last frontier waters of Alaska. His passion of the discoveries, fishing, crabbing and exploring were shared with many of his friends and family aboard the MV Journey.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Reye Hines of 30 years; her children Teri Sahm, Danielle Beck, and Jim Harris ; and his children, Taren Hines Atkins, Blake Loel Hines, Ryan Gibson, Randy Gibson; and his grandchildren Olivia, Jamie, and Layel.

A Celebration of Life for James will be held in Bellingham, WA.

Bonnie, we only recently heard of Jim's passing. Such a wonderful person and gentle soul. Kathy and I wanted to let you know we are thinking of you, despite not seeing either of you in many years in Wrangell....Keith Appleman
