James Noah Hinson, M.D, 86, of Salisbury, passed away at 4:25 p.m., Monday, March 30, 2015. He had been in declining health for the past few years. He was the husband of Patricia Ann Leighton Hinson. Dr. Hinson was born January 12, 1929 at Mabery Place, Porter Station, Stanly County. He was the third son of Virgie Irene Eagle, a former Ponds School teacher and William Crowell Hinson, a farmer. Dr. Hinson, who specialized in internal medicine with an emphasis on cardiac, pulmonary and hematologic diseases, practiced medicine in Rowan County over 40 years. He retired in 2008. His office was located on Mocksville Avenue. In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Hinson owned and operated a farm in Rowan County, since the late 1960s. During grammar school years, Dr. Hinson attended Baden School in Baden; Millingport School in Millingport; Shaver School, a four-room school house on Reaves Island Road in Rowan County. He graduated from Richfield School and attended Mars Hill College. From 1950 to 1952, Dr. Hinson served in the United States Army during the Korean War – spending the initial part as a rifleman in Camp Atterbury near Edinburgh, Ind. and later as military policeman [MP]. While in the army, he attended Candidates for Officers Training School. He served in Company E, 112th Regiment, Army 28th Division. He graduated from Catawba College in Salisbury with a bachelor's degree and a double major in chemistry and biology. From 1956 to 1960, he attended Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem. Later, Bowman Gray was renamed Wake Forest University School of Medicine. From 1960 to 1961, Dr. Hinson completed an internship at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. The first year residency at Charleston Memorial Hospital in Charleston, W.Va. focused on lung diseases. From 1962 to 1966, he completed an additional four years residency in New Orleans, La. focused on cardiology, pulmonology, hematology and neurology under the auspices of Tulane University School of Medicine. Dr. Hinson enjoyed genealogical research and history, gardening, poetry, cooking, spending time with his children and grandchildren. Dr. Hinson is survived by his wife Patricia (daughter of Mary Ruth McTall [Metallo] and Clarence Harland Leighton) and three children: Hélène Andorre Hinson Staley of Moncure; Häns Leighton Hinson, M.D. of Mount Pleasant, S.C. and Nicole Suzanne Hinson, M.D. of Huntersville. Dr. Hinson is survived by seven grandsons: Zachary Christopher Staley, Nicholas Staley, Benjamin “Ben” Noah Patrick Staley – each of Moncure; Jonah Karsch Hinson, Noah Karsch Hinson, Elijah Karsch Hinson and Micah Karsch Hinson – each of Mount Pleasant, S.C. He is survived by his sisters Betty Lou Hinson Heath of High Point and Margaret Ann Hinson Gordon of Rowan County; 12 nieces, 8 nephews; 14 grandnephews, 12 grandnieces, 3 great grandnephews, 7 great grandnieces. Dr. Hinson was the brother of the late Rachel Evelyn Hinson Hill, brother-in-law of the late Paul Junior “Bud” Hill; brother of the late Richard Clyde “Chub or Chubby,” Hinson; the late William “Bill” Crowell Hinson, Jr. – nicknamed “June,”; brother-in-law of the late John Arthur Gordon; brother-in-law of the late James Edwin "Ed" Heath; brother-in-law of Merrell Lenora Goodman Hinson; brother-in-law of the Pansy Ruth Hampton Hinson. He leaves behind his daughter-in-law Vanessa Karsch Hinson, M.D., wife of Hans; son-in-law Howard Anthony Staley, D.P.M., husband of Hélène. The family will receive friends and family at Summerset Funeral Home in Salisbury on Friday, April 3, from 6:00-8:00 PM. The funeral will be held at Luthers Lutheran Church on Saturday, April 4 at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Tommie Beaver officiating. Interment will follow at Luthers Lutheran Church Cemetery – also known as Piney Woods Church Cemetery, located at the intersection of Richfield Road (State Road 1005) and Stokes Ferry Road (SR 1004), #4955 Richfield Road, Morgan Township, southeastern Rowan County. Memorial donations can be given to the American Cancer Society. Summersett Funeral Home is serving the Hinson family. Online condolences may be made at www.summersettfuneralhome.com.
