James Hutchinson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 26, 2021.
James Levi Hutchinson 98, husband of the late Evelyn Ribbs Hutchinson of Hillsborough, California passed away peacefully on May 26, 2021 at Peninsula Hospital. He touched many lives with his gentle spirit, unique bedside manner and positive outlook on life. James was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on March 27, 1923, son of the late Lorenzo and Janie Hutchinson. He is survived by his devoted daughter Karen and his son Henry. His eldest son James Levi Jr. predeceased him in February 2017. He is also survived by his niece Jane Saxton, her daughter Annette, grandson John Michael and countless other loving relatives. His most devoted second generation cousin Earl Brown of Oakland always brightened his day upon his arrival. Their friendship and bond was genuine and cherished by both. His esteemed and devoted colleague Dr. Milton Hamblin of Ohio, who attended Meharry medical school (Dr. Hutchinson's alma mater), and his dear wife Daphne were great friends until his death. James earned an undergraduate degree from Wiley College in Texas. He then served in the Army during World War 2. After graduation from medical school in 1950 he enjoyed a 70+ year career in medicine. Over the years Dr. Hutchinson was the recipient of multiple awards as an active civic leader of the San Mateo NAACP, Council of Civic Unity, NAACP Credit Union, St. James AME Zion Trustee Board, member of the National Medical Association, San Mateo County Medical Association, an Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, American Academy of Family Physicians, San Mateo Academy of African American Community Health Advisory Committee, founding member of Planned Parenthood and the Bay Area Urban League. Lastly, in 2019 Mrs. Claire Mack (former mayor of San Mateo) was a driving force in renaming the corner of San Mateo Drive and Tilton Avenue to Dr. Hutchinson's Corner. A memorial service will he held in late summer when Covid restrictions have been relaxed. Details will be forthcoming at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in memory of Dr. James L. Hutchinson to the Dr. James L. Hutchinson and Evelyn Ribbs Hutchinson Medical School Scholarship Fund.

Dr James Hutchinson memory will never fade he’s like family his kindness and tough grit will always be a memory that I will cherish. No matter the circumstances he always found a way to keep you laughing at your own situation. Their is no one else that I can compare him to other than my late husband they shared the same sense of humor. He holds a spot in my heart just like Samuel my husband. I can still hear his jokes and realness when I think of him and that’s pretty often.

We met when I moved to San Mateo and started walking very early in the morning. It took me by pleasant surprise when I walked into your office a few months later for my first visit with my new primary doctor. You were a gem. Like a father. We were birthday buddies and I will never forget our many conversations. I am so fortunate to have been in your presence. You were a gift to us all.

Dr. James Hutchinson was for sure an icon! I was lucky enough to have him as my doctor for 20 + years. Every visit annually was much more than a yearly check-up. We could talk about any topic that was happening in the world. He was a handsome man that had a great smile and laughter was easy. Dr. Hutchinson was so smart and down to earth. His memory was incredible, he could remember things that happened in his childhood. I learned that when I became his personal fitness trainer. I had the pleasure to train him weekly on his day off. Our relationship was no longer Dr. and patient. Dr. Hutchinson became a mentor and good friend. His words of wisdom are words I will always keep with me and I use them with my current clients daily. I had the pleasure to wish him a happy 98th birthday. He was in good spirits and looking forward to the future and resuming personal training. Religion was important to him and I believe he is now with the lord and with family. He will forever be missed but not forgotten. San Mateo County's first black doctor! Thank you for being so valuable to so many of us. You paved the way for many people including me. Rest in peace, Dr. James Hutchinson. My wife Theresa and I will miss you!

Dr. Hutchinson was a great man, and although I didn’t know him well, I had such respect and affection for him the times that we conversed. His daughter Karen is a jewel, reflecting her father’s kindness, strength, and spirit. May his memory be eternal.

Knew Hames as his patient for about 20 + years. In 2017 I found myself in ICU at a Silicon Valley hospital for 3 weeks. A day or two after being transferred to recovery, I received a call from Dr. Hutchinson to check on my condition. I told him I felt lucky to be alive and blessed to have survived my ordeal. He replied “ don’t worry Gordon, only the good die young”.

We shared a hearty laugh and I was very happy for his call. A straight shooter standing on solid ground. The world is less beautiful with distinguished gentlemen like James Hutchinson !
God speed.

May 7th 2021 around noon was the last time I saw Dr Hutchinson. It’s been over a year since I visited his office before the pandemic in 2019. He was high in spirit and pleasing in manner as always but he had become very frail in terms of physical condition. I was hoping to see him at least one more time before his planned retirement in July. Little did I know, that’s not going to happen. It’s amazing that he can work till 98 years of age. With much admiration for his contribution to society, I will miss him dearly.
